I am not handsome, i know that, but doesnt it irks you when ppl who you dont know calls you darling or babe ?

I tell you the reason why i dont like it,

1) I work at a shop and when a women calls me darling its demeaning to me because they think i will get them a better price if they call me that, im not deseprate

2) They dont know me close enough to call me that,

3) I am not sure if she really means it or if she is a MILF,

Well i know i sound a little snobbish here but what if i were to come up to you and call you babe the very first time i met you ? would you be ok with it ? its not a question of gender here, its a question of being a little sensible of what you call ppl, I dont mind an elderly ppl call me that, but ppl of my same age and maybe a little over my age calling me that is really demeaning and a little sexist

I dont mind women calling me that actually but shouldnt it be done after knowing you a few times at least ?

Any type of action that does not make you feel comfortable should not be tolerated Find some polite thing to say when people call you that Simply say Excuse me my name is not darling but lets say Patrick Apparently you must have a really nice careing personality It is actually a compliment We used to have a lady in New York who worked for Stewarts in Black River NY she was know as the Honey lady She used to call everyone honey We loved her and she always treated everyones children like her own granchildren We loved her She has now retired and when I go home to visit some how Stewarts is just not the same without the Honey lady

I think it is inappropriate to call people sweet names that you don't know and this includes the elderly. I was taught in school that calling people by these names is improper especially if have a name and it can be demeaning like your talking to them like they are a little kid or baby. People should be treated as mature adults which includes elderly because it shows professionalism and respect. If say these names to the wrong person, they will take offense and say that is not my name and who gave you the right to call me that and might take as being hit on which would be very annoying.

Mate I think you need to stop acting like an idiot, if you are working in this kind of shop where people call you darling and a babe then this is your problem. People say this to be polite to people they don't know. Better then saying, you behind the till, how much is this, by the way you look less then average.

In the south of the US woman do this often. It is not to be demeanig or disrespectful. It is just that everyone is so friendly, we either use a nickname or call everyone, including women, darling, sweetie, hun, etc... The only instance I feel it would be inappropriate, would be to call my superior at work by those names. We usually use their first name or official nickname in such case.

Its just an affectionate term, don't think so much into it and no I don't believe its any different when a bloke calls me darlin or babe, doesn't bother me at all !!! I've got more important things to worry about than that!

Are you new to the south or something? If so, that could explain it. Darlin', Sweetheart, Honey, Sugar, they're all names I've called people. Just deal with it, no one means any harm by it.

I agree with you but alot of people tend to do it. I get it regularly from both men and women. I think they intend it to be just a polite greeting but it does always feel a little weird.
