White light when refracted through a prism contains all colors. Black absorbs all colors. We only see reflected color.

White is all colors, black is the absence of all colors.

White is the combination of all colors. White has the highest possible brightness and has no hue. To be a color there must be a hue. Also, black is the complete lack of any color. So think of your color line as starting with black, no color at all, progressing through every color out there and ending with white which again is the combination of all colors.
