I have had more and more stove pipes with my Ruger 22. I usually shoot 500 rounds at a time and in the past it was rare but now I bet I stove pipe 50% of the time.

You shoot 500 rounds at a time?! I suspect one of two things, if not both. The gun is getting too dirty to operate efficiently. Or, you've worn the ejector or extractor out.

If you must shoot that much, make sure you are shooting the cleanest ammo you can buy.

When you clean your rifle, assuming you do, do you clean your extractor out, as well? Having a buildup of carbon may reduce the strength of your extractor and make it more difficult to throw the casing free of the bolt before it starts forward. Blasting some Rem-oil on it should help. If that doesn't help, you may need to replace the extractor spring.

Stovepiping can be caused by many things: Ammo, improperly holding your gun, dirty or defective magazines, unpolished feeding ramp.

Make sure you are not holding your gun limp-wristed (in a .22 its unlikely but make sure). Then disassemble your magazines and clean them (but don't oil or lub them). If its still stovepiping change to a hotter ammo. If all else fails have your gun checked out by a competent gunsmith. The ramp may have to be polished.

Best.

If you are getting getting about 50% stovepiping , some is drastically wrong. I would bring it to have it repaired by a gunsmith, or ship it back to the factory for repairs.

When I had that problem I tried different ammunition and found that Mini-Mags worked the best in my Mark I.

Try different types of ammo and use the one which works the best.
