What do you have to do to get baptised as a lutheran? Do you have to do it around Easter? If so, Is there a way to get it done before the end of the year?

You have received great answers from usafbrat, and Sakurachan.

Generally, in our Church, (Lutheran Church Canada in fellowship with LCMS) instruction takes place one night a week for about two hours, 6-8 weeks. So you could have everything taken care of by the end of the year.

I'm glad to hear that you are in a hurry!

When an infant is Baptized in a Lutheran Church, the onus is on the parents and sponsors to look after the spiritual growth of the child, ensuring that he or she is instructed in the faith.

As an adult, the responsibility is yours alone (with the help of the Holy Spirit). Baptism is not just a symbolic act performed to join a Church, but a Sacrament instituted by our Lord Jesus Christ. You must desire the forgiveness of sins, and the gift of the Holy Spirit that it imparts. It is also your responsibility to to honor and intend to keep the vows that you will make when you are baptized, as well as continuing to study Scripture and with the Lords help grow in your faith. You will be asked to renounce the devil and all his works (depending on your Pastors preference, or the congregations practice, this may be preceded by a short exorcism rite), and confess your faith in the Apostles Creed. There are additional vows if confirmation takes place at the same time.

In many of our congregations adult instruction for baptism and confirmation are done together, likewise the sacrament of Baptism takes place as part of the confirmation rite, thus the confirmand is admitted to full communicant membership.

May God continue to bless you, increasing in you true knowledge of Him and of His will. Amen.

There is no set time of the year for receiving Holy Baptism in the Lutheran Church. As a young person or adult, however, you will have to go through instruction using Luther's Small Catechism before you receive Holy Baptism.

Your best bet is to contact an LCMS pastor/congregation in your area & talk directly with him. Here's the link for finding one: http://www.lcms.org/ca/www/locators/nchurches/church.asp.

Below I will give you a few links to 2 page pamphlets that may help you in learning more about Lutheran Baptism. Don't buy a Luther's Small Catechism with Explanation, you'll be given one if you decide to go through instruction. You can also ask to borrow one from the pastor before hand if you want. It, too, will probably answer a lot of your questions. Great little book! I use it all the time to answer questions in this Y!A forum.

Hope this helps!

There is no set time to be baptized as a child of God in the Lutheran church. Go speak to your local pastor, he may have you go through instruction before he will baptize you. I know that my husband spent quite a few lunches with our pastor going through things, doing some readings, speaking about faith, etc.

Go to the Lutheran Pastor of your choice....being which ever church you're going to attend.... If you're an adult you take a few classes that explain the Lutheran religion etc....then I do believe that to be baptized into the church it does have to go before the church board.....(I think).... anyway a baptisim can be done anytime of the year.....Babies are ususally done about 6 weeks after they are born......It also may depend on the synod that you want to join....at present there are 3 synods...American, Wisconsin, & Missouri... If there are others I don't know what they are....
