I have a rather skinny frame (because i've never exercised my whole life)...and now i'd like to bulk up....i've been told to have protein bars or extra protein in my diet, but what I think I want to do is to build the best amount of muscle I can build on a normal regular diet. I say this because won't muscle disintergrate if I stop eating the extra protein?

Regular diet is not enough. But suppliments can be just as bad if you don't know what your taking.
You know, I have the same problem you do. I'm 17 and just naturally skinny. First off, muscle dont deteriorate if you stop eating extra protein. Remaining inactive and eating a poor diet will contribute to losing tone and strength.
Now as far as what you should eat...
Cut out sugar almost completely...its hard at first, but after doing it for a few months, I can't stand anything too sweet.
DRINK WATER! Alot of it. Down atleast 8-10 bottles of water a day. Your body needs it. Drink Nothing but water!
Also, stay away from fried, spicy, and fatty foods. They'll only make you weak.
Try eating lots of lean beefs, lean chicken, and fish. Rice, beans, and nuts are also good.
Avoid alot of dairy and soy. it has alot of protein, but very little of it is usable by the body *very important to remember, just cause something says it has alot of protein doesnt mean the body can use it. this extra protein just adds stress to the digestion system and can inhibit good digestion*
On the subject of protein, alot of protein drinks and bars aren't all that good for the body. Theyre really artifical and don't have much usable protein. They'll pretty much make you fat unless you work out like CRAZY.
Now, I know this one sounds weird, but it works. Its called "Hemp protein". Yes...it is made from hemp seed. Its completely legal, and suprisingly VERY protein rich. Its 50 percent protein, and almost all of it is usable by the body. I really like to rant about this stuff cause it really is amazing. The best part is, it just tastes like oregano or any other kind of herb. Just sprinkle it on pasta or anything else you eat. I put mine in Iced Green Tea and it tastes really good.
(btw, tell your parents your taking it. someone told me alot of it can make you test positive for pot, just like eating poppy seeds can make you test positive for cocaine. Just know that if you do test positive, your parents know you take it an you'll be ok.)
So anyway, good luck. Make sure you learn how to properly exercise and don't overwork yourself. I found out that by lifting everyday, I was losing muscle. So, go to a buff friend and ask for help. I did, and now 4 months later, I can bench twice than what I started and I've gained 10+ lbs of muscle (that alot for health weight gain).

To build muscle, yes you do want to include more protein in your diet. I would definitely skip the protein bars unless you read the labels well. Most protein bars not only have a lot of junk in them but the protein is not usually very good.
A better source of coarse would be to get protein from the foods that you eat but you also can add protein powder (whey protein) The protein from whey is much better than from protein bars and it is a high quality, easy to digest protein, so it goes to work right away. You will want to stick with 1-2 servings a day and no go overboard. If you get a lot of protein from the foods you eat then take 6 or 8 servings of protein it will put too much strain on your liver. So don't always think that more is better.
If you continue to work your muscles hard but are past the building stage you can retain them through your diet. If you have never tried whey protein, you may find that this is one supplement that you may want to continue with. I have it for breakfast as a smoothie with fruit and oatmeal (cooked) and it's a high quality breakfast and works out to be much cheaper than cereal or bacon & eggs.
Ricotta cheese (usually found in lasagna and is kept in the dairy case) is also a good source of protein. It's a bit more expensive than whey powder, but it also makes a good breakfast when you want something different.

a regular diet with a normal amount of protein should be sufficient, the most important thing to do is to stress the muscle fibers then rest them so they grow. Muscle doesn't "disintegrate" if you stop eating extra protein, but it does shrink if you stop exercising. You should also consider your genetic predisposition, it may be difficult for you to "bulk up", although you can certainly increase you current muscle size and fitness level. But extra protein is usually not necessary.

6 meals a day: 3 of them need to be protein shakes..Ispopure is the best tasting protein shakes. The other 3 meals need to be of meat (ckn, fish, beef) and veggies and some sort of WHOLE WHEAT (pasta. brown rice, red potatoe). Eat healthy and eat one cheat meal a week...whatever you want to eat one day. This works great and I follow this for years and love the way I look. Good luck!

you need more than a regular diet. you cant just eat to satisfy your protien need. you need to eat a ton of food. so in order to satisfy your protien requirement you need to take protien suppliments.
