He was preaching specifically to His disciples, but there were crowds gathered who also heard. It's a case of listening in.... we tend to listen more intently to things that we aren't supposed to be listening to. So, by ignoring those in the crowd and speaking specifically to His disciples, the ones in the crowd strained to hear and learn. Which was probably His intent all along!
