I am 18. 5'11", 135lbs. I have been working out for almost 2 years, am not happy with results. gained 9 lbs. Here is what I started doing. (mon-legs, wed-chest, fri-arms. 3 sets each workout of 6 to 8 reps) Started doing a new workout about 6 months ago with better results (mon-legs, wed-chest. 4 sets each of 8 to 10 reps). I was eating 4,000 cal a day and just got fat. I think it is my workout thats the problem. I would like to look like a mix between T.O. (football guy) and Bruce Lee (ripped). Would like someone to tell me how many reps, sets ect. What I should eat? Dont feed me that protein crap we get plenty in our food. Would prefer someone who has been a former skinny guy who is an Ectomorph. Or someone who has worked with someone like me and got great results. Please post your credentials. I do have a Gym Membership. Can't afford a trainier. Dont trust them anyway because they are mostly all big guys who dont understand my situation. Am excited to hear your answers!

i would say just eat healthy amounts of fat, and the right kind of fat.
my brother was skinny too when he was your age, and he took protein shakes and ate brownies, cookies, fast food, soda by the liter, basically everything that was fatty and high in calories so he could gain weight.
sooo unhealthy and i saw no difference but i think his poor diet caused skin problems.and he seemed depressed and tired all the time.trust me, your diet does affect everything.
my friend was 6 ft, and also 135 lbs, long and lean, went to the marines, and was stil about the same.he had training all the time, but there was no significant difference...
wat i'm saying is it might just take time. my dad was practically skeletal up until he was 25, and that brother i was telling you about, well he's eating better, and now he's 21, and looks more bulked up now. his abs are more defined, his arms, i think it had alot to do with just gettin a little older.
well, i say just give it time, eat healthy, stay active, and to tel ya the truth, not all girls like that ripped look...a little tone and definition is great, but big and bulky...alot of girls can agree that they just like normal, cuz thats what we are.our bodies arent perfect, and we'd love to just appreciate your looks and your body if you do the same for us.
my bf now, is about 6 ft and 145,he's 21, and i love his body.
dont be so hard on yourself, you'll see that some one loves the way you look just as you are.

If you want to get muscular do not play basketball. That doesn't get you very muscular. Try swimming. I used to be a type of skinny guys however after I swam competitively I began getting various muscle. But some skinny guys are ok.

Ok, firstly weight lifting is not the same as fitness.

You should have a general routine that involves weights and cardio-excercise (running, cycling, or hiking in mountains).

You should also dump the carbs for protien. Eat lots of lean beef, tofu, beans and take protien supplements. If you are doing a lot of cardio exercise keep enough carbs for this.

You build muscles when you tear muscle. It is the burn you should feel at the very end of the last set. The muscle tears and then reforms. It is generally considered that 3 sets of 8 reps is the best, with few reps getting the best result. Whatever you do the last lift of the set should be the one you are only just able to do (or you do it with the help of someone to spot you).

If you just life weights without doing this then you will build strength but not bulk. I used to be 48kgs but cycle for more than an hour and a half everyday. I could life the same with my legs as my friend who could lift double with what I could with every other muscle in his body through working out.

You also should work out with someone who will push you and help you workout harder.

I don't have credentials, but this is what professional trainers, physiotherapists, nutrional experts and the various books I have read have told me. I have also used this process to build muscles and worked out with my friend who had already built up a fair amount of muscle with the same approach.

The muscle head trainer in the gym will just tell you what he has heard and he got his muscles using steroids.

Which brings us to the last tip. Doctors will often prescribe a cycle of steroids to someone who is slim wanting to build muscle, so go to your doctor and ask (someone at the gym is likely to help you find one). You go on one cycle and build up muscles quickly, then keep working out to keep them (using steroids for a long time will give you all sorts of health problems...including pissing blood, roid rage and shrinking ball sack...using illegal steroids can be dangerous)

Finally taller people build up muscle bulk slower than shorter people. My tall friends worked hard and had no muscles while my short friend was nearly as wide as he was tall.

the best answer is to go to a nutritionist and ask for help. for sure thats something you can afford. with cases like this, online stuff wouldn't be a very credible source. but hey, goodluck with your problem!
