Catholic churches have always been designed to permit those in attendance to easily recognize the spiritual connection between earth and heaven, that occurs when Jesus becomes present on the altar for us at Mass.
And since the real and substantial body and blood of Jesus Christ is typically present in every Catholic church, 24/7 and 365, interior accommodations suitable to reflect the awesome reality of God's presence are most certainly in order.
If you check your bible, you'll find that God had no problem with Solomon's Temple, Herod's Temple, or with the use of very expensive ointment being used on Jesus, shortly before his crucifixion.
God also had no problem accepting gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh from the Magi, at Christ's birth.
This is what Jesus said to Judas, when Judas complained, just as you have:
Joh 12:4 Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's [son], which should betray him,
Joh 12:5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?
Joh 12:6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.
Joh 12:7 Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.
Joh 12:8 For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.

I do not attend a church with an ornate building. I have always had a problem with doing so for the exact reasons you discussed. The arguement for it is that we should give our best for God and his house should be the most beautiful building we enter. However, I think God would rather us donate that few million dollars to feed his children than to have nice stained glass windows

We know what Jesus thought from his actions and words from when He entered the church in Jerusalem!!
And anyone & everyone could do 'MORE' for the world, let alone the poor... Yes the church has a lot to answer to... and come judgement day it will... but so will the rest of the human race!!
Shalom, and God Bless.

Much like other religious founders I guess. Buddha, Lao Tze, would have abhorred the ostentatious temples erected in their names.
Jesus would have turn over his grave( if he died) or avert his glance (if he's in heaven). Much of the ornate churches or religious buildings are done, to stoke the ego of the rulers/preachers/kings/emperors that the buildings were built for.

which church? the one i attend is pretty plain...good question, though...i've seen some that just freak me out, like that 'crystal cathedral'...what they're spending to cool that place would probably feed a third world country...and if you've ever watched ewtn, you'll see enough gold to make mr t pass out...i can't help wondering, how many incas or mayans were killed in order for the 'one true church' to accumulate all that 'bling?'

A prophecy that I read says:
"Yea, they have all gone out of the away; they have become corrupted. Because of pride, and because of false teachers, and false doctrine, their churches have become corrupted, and their churches are lifted up; because of pride they are puffed up. They rob the bpoor because of their fine sanctuaries; they rob the poor because of their fine clothing; and they persecute the meek and the poor in heart, because in their pride they are puffed up. They wear astiff necks and high heads; yea, and because of pride, and wickedness, and abominations, and whoredoms, they have all gone astray save it be a few, who are the humble followers of Christ; nevertheless, they are led, that in many instances they do err because they are taught by the precepts of men."
Sounds about like today, doesn't it?

I could understand if the poor could stay in the church so they could keep warm but the Church officials would call it
LOITERING and have them removed!
a bit naive and false I feel!

To attract a bigger, wealthier crowd, for bigger and better donations. That big Glass Cathedral..hmmm .. that had to cost a fortune.
