I have six weeks in which to travel and am wondering if anyone knows of anything about travel (or good places to just relax) in Vietnam in December / January ?

Hoi An Vietnam. Hoi An is a world heritage ancient city. The town is absolutely beautiful. Great food and wonderful people. The market place is amazing and the tailors are famous. You just can't beat it and December is the high season. The temperature is great and the river just rolls on by.

Vietnam is starting to have Many tourists. While it is still not crowded in the sense that Thailand is it is not the serene peaceful place it used to be.

On the other hand Lao is really peaceful. It is not on most peoples radar yet and the population is really low. Few people and beautiful surroundings. Luang Prabang is a cozy little town in the central north. I loved this stop on my trip. The Laotian people as a whole are not as mercenary as the merchants of the surrounding countries and the sights are great and beautiful. If you want great food and more action I would pick Vietnam. Kicked back living and beautiful terrain I would pick Lao.

Have fun

Winter in VN, which means the further north you go, potentially the less pleasant it will be (if you are from Canada it isn't all that unpleasant - you should know what cold REALLY is!).

Phu Quoc Island in the far south would be a quiet, warm place to relax.

Sapa in the north would be cold, but it is such an interesting place that if you are not put off by the threat of cold and fog, check it out!
