I also have to wonder if the angels accompanying him will have flashlights strapped to their trumpets. It will awfully hard to smite everyone when the sun and moon have dimmed and the stars fallen from the sky.

I almost didn't understand where you got this from. What the prophecy is about is Jesus returning with the two edged sword of truth... it is the gospel message.
Eph. 6: 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
What will come out of Christ's mouth will be the truth, a rebuke against the nations and setting things in order. It will be every bit as painful as a literal sword to many.

God represents himself symbolically as having a mouth. None of his pronouncements are uttered to no purpose, in vain; they will be fulfilled to the smallest detail.
