how to say 'she is a director' - a female film director - in italian? translations say director = 'direttore' but is there a female version of the word?

It's "è una regista".

(film) director is in Italian regista both for male or female.
You may understand that's an woman from the indeterminative feminine article "una" while should it be referred to a man it would be "è un regista".
"Direttore" (or "direttrice" if female) is the generic name of the director but if you mean "film director" that's just "regista"
