Pride.
The first sin ever committed by anyone. It makes you do things that yes, are very stupid.
Lucifer's pride became Satan's sin. Contrary to what another poster here suggested, angels have free will. What makes them different from humans is that they all all spirit, and have none of the limitations that are imposed on us because of our human nature. Adam and Eve were deceived and tricked into disobeying God. Satan was not deceived and tricked - he actually made a willful choice to rebel against God, and for that he will never be forgiven. All of the other fallen angels made a free will choice too. None of this was preordained - yes God knew ahead of time how it was going to turn out because He's all-knowing but that doesn't mean that they couldn't have chosen not to rebel against God.
It's sort of like watching someone you know do something that is bad for them, and you just know how it's going to turn out for them, and you'd really like to just step in and stop them, or lecture them about why they shouldn't do that, but people have to be free to make their own mistakes and hopefully learn from them - In most cases they wouldn't listen to you anyway. That's God's greatest gift to us (other than His salvation for us), His gift of free will and the freedom to make our own choices. The downside is that there are consequences for making bad choices.

You know? It's not like they rebelled immediately. It took Satan some time to con-vince them to abandon their heavenly abode to join him on the earth! where he promised them things they never even dreamed of before such as sex with the beautiful women of the day! etc.! where they would be lords over the many for thousands of years to come, etc... who knows what all he told them to make them disobey the One who had given them everything up until now, including free will! None of God's creations were robots but free agents! and like you say, they knew the end-result and knew that a God of love would only ultimately destroy them in the last day! After all! what does any fire do to anything that goes through it? It destroys and purifies it! and this is what truly awaits them a thousand years from now to us, which is only a day from now to them! So like the song says, they decided to go for a good time and not the long time! In other words they chose death to life! The same thing we all have to do sooner or later! God in not partial!

They rebelled because they wanted to be above God. It's the sin of pride, thinking you're better than someone else. Satan convinced a third of the angels that he was better than God, more powerful, etc. It's much like today's world, where so many follow after the wrong people.
Isaiah 14:12-14
How you have fallen from heaven,
O morning star, son of the dawn!
You have been cast down to the earth,
you who once laid low the nations!
13 You said in your heart,
"I will ascend to heaven;
I will raise my throne
above the stars of God;
I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly,
on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain.
14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;
I will make myself like the Most High."

I don't think they thought they would lose, the question is is God, such a bad ruler that he can not control 1/3 of his angels. What did they hate about God to rebel, why do they have the knowledge of sin?

because they were stupid LOL. and satan the stupidest of all because He served God directly. He was an archangel directly in the service of God. He saw him face to face in all His splendour. and yet, He thought he could de-throne and overthrow God. (Well, At least God still has the other 2 archangels that backed him up lol)
But... Erm.... lol God's omnipotent, omniciencet and omnipresent. He is the Creator of everything,.... including angels ... how on earth did they think their plan would work? LOL But because of pride, satan wanted to be God, and rebelled and enlisted the help of 1/3 of the angels to try and throw God out of heaven. At least the other 2/3 had a brain and understood God's holiness and the wickeness of that situation.
Best satan and his cronies did was harass the living crap out of the other angels and annoy God until he gave them all the boot. And created hell for them.
But this scenario always makes me laugh. He's God.... how are you gonna beat him up and throw Him out of heaven?
*duh*...... i guess the moral is, it just goes to show you what pride will do....
and even though things get a mess for us, and people attack us in various ways.... God is still in control. I know i need to keep that in mind.

Maybe they had good reason... perhaps the punishment was worth it to stand against such a god as described in the old testament who told his people to stone a man to death for picking up sticks, dismember animals every day and sprinkle their blood around, wave body parts around etc. Take 2 turtledoves twist ones head off and sprinkle the other one with the blood.. Kill every single first born child of the Egyptians, praise a woman for killing a man by stabbing him through the temples.. I could go on and on.. but you get the point. Maybe they were tired of working for such a tyrant.

In the Book of Genesis, the Bible describes Satan as that serpent who is capable of manipulating angels. Those angels did not decide to rebel. They were manipulated into doing so. Much the same as you deem it necessary to question works of God, They, being created in the image of God, thought it necessary to become their own entities.
God is and was so gracious that he permitted it and named them all.
Satan(Mephistophles and the devil), Strife, Pain, Regret, there are too many to list.
You pretend that you know what "humans" don't know". Don't you go deciding for me what I know and don't know, OK?
I've been to Heaven.
I've been to Hell.
my lucky number's not seven
and I've lived to tell
Oh wait a minute
I'm sorry, I'm not human.
I come from Andromeda
I forgot to say that God created man in God's own image. Think about that, OK?????????????????
Good luck
or the song from the group who plays country and western songs whose name is
Alabama
"I believe there are angels among us,
sent down to guide us....................................................................................................."

You ever hear the saying: "Pride goeth before the fall." The actual saying is from Proverbs 16:18: "Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall." Seems to me we all get a little prideful from time to time. The ego is constantly wanting more. And maybe they, like us, didn't believe there'd be consequences for their actions.

fallen angels were our brothers and sisters
we were born first as spirits then chose to come to earth for a variety of reasons
fallen spirits went away from the plan of God and followed satans plan
but yeah you kind of have to think what in the world were they thinking
there is probably more to the story then we know, yet
