I'm really good about exercising once I've got a "routine" (especially when I have a lot of time on my hands). Problem is that whenever my routine gets disrupted I have a very hard time getting back into it. Plus, since exercise isn't my favorite thing it's the first to go when my schedule gets really busy.

For instance, I had been running regularly for the past several months. The school semester just started and now I'm really busy and I've slipped out of the routine. I want to start up again but I am worried I'll have lost the progress I had made...and I'm feeling discouraged.

The problem with "routines" are that they get boring after a long period of time. When you get bored, you just don't feel like exercising. Plus after a long period of time when doing the same routines over and over again, your muscles get used to this routine and you stop getting results and changes in your body which leads to more lack of motivation. So the solution is that you need to mix it up a bit. Don't stay on one routine for more than one week. For example lets say, for this week, you run for 20-30 mins every other day, then next week try something new. Try plyometric exercises which are jump training. (there are a lot of videos you can find online for these type of exercises.) Or maybe you can try some type of boxing workout. This type of workout isn't just good for your body, but also is good to relieve stress because you just let it all out especially if you have a lot of exams and homeworks, etc. Then the next week try something new again, like weight lifting. Then the next week try yoga. You know what I mean? The trick to sticking to exercise is you have to make it fun. Do something you like doing and don't stick to one routine for too long. Always open new doors even if you haven't really tried a certain type of exercise, who knows you might end up liking it :) hope that helps!

I wouldn't worry about loosing the progress you made before, you'll be back where you were quicker than your got there in the first place.

I used to run 5km twice a day - it was my commute to and from work (there were showers a work so I didn't sit around the office all day stinking) and I found that really easy to maintain. Now I have moved too far from work to run (17km)and find it really hard to maitain a rutine.
