My rats do the same thing! Don't worry, its normal rat behaviour. They probably like to burrow around in it and make themselves a nest. This might be a smelly solution but it will probably work. Instead of putting the bedding in their cage you can put newspaper on the bottom. The only downside to this is you will want to change the paper everyday since it will get smelly really fast. On the bright side the surrounding of your cage will stay clean.
What I did for my rats when I upgraded their cage to a bigger one was to get a BIG guinny pig cage which had a very deep pan in the bottom. Now no matter how much my rats dig and push around their bedding it rarely gets by the high sides on the bottom of the cage :).

Hi,
i have 13 rats and i used this wood chip bedding i bought at walmart and they still kick it out of the cage but that is there way of making there beds and themselves comfortable. the most i can say is let them make a mess and every friday clean it up
:]

Rats love to play and odds are they are having a blast unknowingly annoying you. If they are attempting to make a little cozy spot for themselves, I suggest buying a little nesting box for them. I put a chinchilla wood box in my own rat cage and they bring the bedding in there rather than toss it around.

Several of our rats have done this, too & it *looks* like they're playing (I've watched them do it enough times). They seem to do it less often when they have new toys, so we stock up on playthings & just give each cage a few @ a time so they don't get bored.
When we first met our hooded girl, she actually got our attention by playing with her bedding-- she started piling it up in her glass enclosure directly in front of us.

It just means she putting the bedding how she wants it. Making it nice and cozy. My female hamster does this all the time if I move it! Just make sure that you keep the male from the female lol unless you want rat babbies! Hope this helped!

They're probably making a nest for themselves. My two rats used to push bedding out when they buried themselves to sleep.
