They had been asking for support since the beggining of the war and to a small amount the US did help out in providing equipment and small forces of specialised man such as pilots which is well documented and their has been many movies made portraying this.
Also later on they were dragged into the war by the Japenese invading Hawaii. Their is still ongoing debate weather the government knew about this and said nothing as an excuse to enter the war as the majority of their war ships and carriers had left days before the attack. All these arguments aside they did enter the war and fought in europe, africa, pacific and asia.
To conclude, Yes, Europe nations had asked for the united states help as America was in its industrial revoloution and was becoming the worlds superpower which clearly showed after the war they were.

Europe shouldn't have had to ask to get rid of Hitler but it did but there were too many in USA who were to busy profiteering from it.
In hindsight imagine how many more people wold have been saved from the gas chambers if they had helped rid the world of the ultimate evil.
That's why I can't understand how you can call the French cowards because they didn't need be asked they offered just like NZ,Canada and Australia and their country became occupied because of it.
I am so proud of my country Australia they may be small but they have always been there when it is right thing to do.
Skyop I do read real history books I don't learn my history by watching hollywood movies and it is history that France were one of the first countries to back Britain against Hitler before they were occupied.

That is not a military question, and in any case it begs overly-simplisitic answers. There was a strong feeling of public sympathy in America for the victims of Nazi and Imperial Japanese aggression, but there was also a strong feeling of isolationism among Americans.
The USA would never have entered the war in response to a request for help, and the country entered WW2 because your government considered that it was in your interests to do so. That was a decision with which I agree, by the way.

Two days after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, germany declared war on the USA in December 1941.
Until then the USA had been trading with both sides.

Wow. Sounds like a few of those who answered need to crack open a history book. The French did not offer to help; they were invaded.
But for the record, I thank God that we count Australia as one of our staunchest allies.

The US received pressure from England to join in as soon as possible, rightfully so.
Political pressures held us off from joining in quicker which worked in hindsight, it gave the US time to build up its industrial capacity.
