They can find most of the acorns that they hide and dig them up later when they need the food. They always miss a few however which is natures plan for planting oak trees. This is not exclusive to acorns, they do the same with pecans and other nuts as well.

Gray squirrels can be observed faking where they bury food in order to hide it from each other. However, they depend for winter and spring survival on communal food storage. **Squirrels remember the general area where they buried things but find the exact spot with their super-noses. Since there are only so many places to bury stuff in the suburban environment (e.g. in my friend Marc’s window box), a canny squirrel can usually find something that she or someone else stashed, until last season’s crop is depleted.

Well there are a couple of thoughts on this subject.
Firstly some people say they have good memories and hide them then go back later to retrieve them.
Some people also think they have bad memories and when they find them hidden somewhere its because of there power of scent meaning they are finding food stored by other squirrels............... Me. i believe the latter

Not really. If you look at them digging in the spring for those, they dig a lot of empty holes and find nothing. Also look at the number of oak sprouts that come up and you will realize they missed a bunch.

I have read that they often do not find them again.
Whereas magpies, who watch the squirrels doing the burial, can later in the season go straight to the exact spot.
