I don't understand this and its a really sore subject with me. Why is everything turning into Spanish? It's America, Americans speak English, not spanish. How come you can't call somewhere without pressing 1 for English or 2 for Spanish. I'm sorry but if you live in this country learning English should be a must. It angers me at work when someone comes in and doesn't speak a lick of English and they get mad at you because you don't understand what they are saying or because you don't know Spanish. Everywhere you look there's signs in Spanish. I just think its wrong. Why would anyone in their right mind want to live somewhere and not know the language. I can't imagine moving to another country and having no idea what people are saying or not being able to read anything. It should be a law. You live in America, LEARN HOW TO SPEAK ENGLISH. If people don't understand English thats their problem, not ours. Why should anyone have to deal with it?

Because of the huge wet-back problem: Republicans want them here for cheap labor in their factories, and Democrats want them here because after they've stolen identities, they tend to to vote for Democrats. (The average illegal alien costs $23,000 per year, in taxes to American citizens, because the illegals pay so little in taxes, but strain the social services "system". )

I hope you never think about going to live in Canada then, because most of their signs, instructions, information, etc is in english and french. I now speak fluent spanish, but when I was in high school I took french. My teacher was a man from France that HATED americans and used to love to use the saying, Those that speak 3 languages are tri-lingual, those that speak 2 are bi-lingual and those that speak 1 are americans. Think about the europeans and how many of them speak multipal languages. It's not a bad thing to learn something that makes someone else a little bit more comfortable. Even if you make an efffort to help someone, it shows that you are a caring person, not a stuck up snob.

LatinAmerican Spanish is different in each country, although you can understand, according to the Royal Academy of the Spanish language, the better Spanish is Mexico and Spain. In contrast to Mexico or spain in Latin America the spanish has had changed. but people from Spain will usually understand Latin American Spanish and vice-versa

I don't speak Spanish and nobody in my family speaks it either. However, it doesn't necessarily mean that we are a bunch of monolingual morons. I have several relatives who speak German fluently and I can get by in it. However, it bugs my relatives that they are not considered to be bilingual even though they speak two languages. It seems that in order to be considered "bilingual" in this country, you have to know the "correct" combination of languages, namely English and Spanish. Anything else, and you're not.

A question I would like to ask is if all Americans learned to speak Spanish, would those people learn English? No, they wouldn't. They don't even try to learn the language. I lived in South Florida and encountered dozens of people like this. They prefer using their children to translate for them or going up to people who look "Hispanic" and speaking Spanish to them. My husband had a co-worker who came from Cuba as a child. He, of course, spoke Spanish, but if people tried speaking it to him, he would answer them in English. He used to say that it was because they are in the US now, not Cuba, and they need to assimilate and stop hiding out in their little enclaves which aren't really that much different than the homes they left behind in Cuba.

If you have not had a reality check yet you should..hispanic people are coming to this country faster than you think, and whether you like it or not you are going to have to hear people speaking spanish, and seeing spanish signs. I speak spanish fluently and as well English. I also learned some french in high school. I would suggest you start learning some spanish, it will probably lessen your headaches. Also remember " Si sabes dos idiomas, vales por dos"( I'll leave that one on you, since you claim that spanish is everywhere)....But overall just get over it, its not going to change anytime soon..

Bilingualism seldom works in the world (Switzerland is a rare exception) and what you wrote simply underscores that fact.

You sound no different than the millions of non-Quebecois Canadians in Canada and Quebec who don't want to learn French either. This even includes many Canadians of Indian and Eskimo (Inuit) heritage.

Not everybody is a multilinguist. I think that the natural tendancy in about 80 to 90% of all human beings is to want to learn just one language, it's probably genetic. That language will usually be whatever the prestige language of the country happens to be. In the case of the United States, it is English like it or not.

I think that the politicans and the courts will eventually resolve the problem you are complaining about pretty much in your favor. However, it's going to take some time. Especially, since part of it will involve proving that Hispanics in the U.S. are not being marginalized or relegated to second-class citizen status by devaluing Spanish.

Well here's what I know of: "All man are created equal" (from the Declaration of Independence) and the Spanish Language is one of the most spoken language in the world. I know what you mean It's just that some Hispanic people want to experience the American Dream.
I hope some of this helps you.

1) A lot of people move to a different country to learn the language better. My American friends went to Korea and came back half fluent in it.

2) Don't be so ignorant. The second most spoken language in America is Spanish. Secondly, English is one of the hardest, if not the most, languages to learn.

3) "Americans" you speak of aren't even native to this country. The real language of The United States of America is a language native americans spoke.

Don't act like this is YOUR country, because I doubt you are native American.

First of all, if you're going to argue about this with the world don't say "americans speak english"
1= English people, speaks english, americans had their own languages
2= America it's a continent for everyone in the world but "americans", actually most of America speaks spanish.

No one's forcing you to learn spanish remain ignorant please

What do you mean by "America"? El Salvador? Brasil? Paraguay? Mexico? etc. all these countries can be called "America" in their own rights. The name of what I suspect you are talking about is "United States of (Northern) America". Which by the way could also apply to Canada or Mexico...

Imagine the frustrations of the Native Americans with your language, and stop being so self centered.
