i was walking down the street today and i saw a kid steal something out of the back of a truck as i walked beside the truck i noticed in the back of the truck was about 20 cans of spray paint just sitting there in the open

do u think this was a sting?

No. Sting operations are expensive in terms of resources and manpower. Stings are used to nail theft or drug rings, etc.; criminals involved in high value crime. A two dollar can of spray paint would be a huge waste of time, money, and manpower.

It doesn't sound like anything other then the owner of the paint being careless. I highly doubt that the police would organize a sting operation to catch a few street thugs. It just doesn't seem as organized as a sting needs to be, not to mention that the police's case wouldn't be very legally tight either.

Maybe, if you saw the police arrest the kid after he stole the spray paint.
