My OS is Vista and the game itself says vista compatible so i'm assuming that i'm going to have to upgrade the ram and graphics card or just switch operating systems if I can.

Two things come to mind.
1. I'll include information on the Blue Screen of Death.
2. It may be that the game is overwhelming your RAM.

Have you checked the specs of the game?
How much RAM do you have?
How much is loaded at one time?

I will also include information on freeing up memory.

Blue Screen of Death
Source: http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/b/blue_screen_of_death.html
Abbreviated BSOD, an error that can appear on computers running in a Windows environment. This includes even the earliest versions of Windows, such as Windows 3.0 and 3.1, and still occurs in later versions such as Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, and Windows 2000. Jokingly called the blue screen of death because when the error occurs, the screen turns blue, and the computer almost always freezes and requires rebooting.

Clean up memory:
1. Set wallpaper and screensavers to blank or none — they run continuously in the background and use memory.
2. Review your start menu – remove anything you don’t need on a daily basis — load games, etc. on an as-needed basis.
3. From Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options: delete cookies, delete files (offline), and clear history. (You can also set days to store history to 0.)
----- These actions will clear your computer’s cache. (For a description of cache, go to http://help.yahoo.com/l/ph/yahoo/mail/access/access-27210.html )
4. Run Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, Defrag at least every two weeks (the more frequently they are run, the less time they take).
5. Periodically, click Start, Programs, Run — they type ipconfig renew
(that’s ipconfig space renew).

These things should increase speed and free up memory as much as possible.

Call the manufacturer. The warranty may still be good on many things.
Are you sure the game is correct for that OS?
Is the game resolution settings ok for video?

Try to see in the device manager if any IRQ's are conflicting.
Look in the administrator tools, event viewer for any error messages.
