You could have been killed just for spitting on the sabbath. Since when you spit, it moved the dirt and therefore was considered 'working the land".

Num 15:37 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
Num 15:38 Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue:
Num 15:39 And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them; and that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go a whoring:
Num 15:40 That ye may remember, and do all my commandments, and be holy unto your God.
Num 15:41 I am the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am the LORD your God
The man have destroyed and did not abide the law of God not to work on sabath, so God impose the punishment to that man inorder to know that God is really imposing the law which was given to the Israel people.
It is a matter of showing descipline to the people of Israel and they are supposed to obey God without fail.
The violation there is not the picking up of wood but for not keeping the sabath day as Holy as ordered by God.

Yes, better to let his family freeze to death than to dare collect some wood for his fire on the Sabbath. God loved him and his family so very much, that when this man refused to let his family freeze, God ordered Moses to kill him - and not gently, either, but by having the entire community stone him to death.
Because it was Saturday.
I dunno about you, but that kind of love I can live without.
This passage is totally illogical . Of course, Christians find ways of rationalizing it, as you'll see in your answers. But it shows God to be a cruel, heartless Master, no matter how you slice it. This passage, and others like it, are part of the reason that I am no longer a fundamentalist Christian.
ADDED: Speaking of love, I just read the answer by Hamoh, below. It is so beautiful when Christians so graciously spread the love of Christ. :)

Hard to believe, huh?
That's the lovely tradition that is Abrahamic religion.
Oh yeah. That's just beautiful. The answerer above me replied that we are now living under GOD'S GRACE.
Errr... the grace of the same god who ordered death for anyone picking up wood on Saturday.

Yes, and he knew better than to do it, but thought he could get away with it.
Aren't you glad that we don't live under the law?
Jesus redeemed us from the curse of the law..
It is not Abrahamic religion, but Mosaic religion. The law came by Moses.
