My 10 year old chihuahua mix has been diagnosed with a collapsing trachea! Does anyone else have a dog with this condition and if so how do you treat it? How long can he live with this disorder?

He was never put on a collar leash, his leashes are the kind that go around his entire body.

It's not necessarily uncommon, especially with brachycephalic breeds.

There's really no cure, esp for a 10 year old dog. Use a harness. If your dog's muzzle is long enough, you might want to try a Gentle Leader. Keep a collar on for ID purposes only, never walk your dog with a leash from a collar.

Keep the weight off your dog. If you notice your dog coughing alot, ask your vet if your dog could benefit from a cough suppressant and antibiotics.

Dogs can live a good life even with a collapsed trachea.

As you have found out they can suffer with this for their entire life. Just have to get them to calm down when they start honking!
