Great question Thanks for asking. In Matthew chapter 23, the 18th verse, it says" And Whoever swears by the altar , that is nothing, but whoever swears by the offering upon it, he is obligated." Just to stand by the altar and swear an oath does not bind the speaker to say the truth, but who ever swears an oath by the offering on the altar is bound to tell the truth. Jesus became the offering on the altar for the sin of the world. When we swear in Jesus name, we better be telling the truth.l This is where, swearing an oath in a courtroom comes in, by placing your hand on the Bible, and swearing to tell the truth and the whole truth and nothing but the truth, So Help Me God, you are bound to tell the truth. To lie after making such an Oath, is punishable by law and by God.
