Beware people who give you cats with health problems and come up with some simple excuse! If this were just irritation from something in her house, it'll clear up on its own in a day or two. (And it is possible that a cleaning product can cause an adverse reaction, especially in a kitten that's scooting along just at carpet level!) However, you have no way of knowing if that's really what's wrong with him and frankly there's never much reason to trust people who are trying to get you to take an animal. I've even had shelter workers lie to my face to try to get me to adopt an animal before, it's ridiculous.
I'd say take the kitten to the vet right away to make sure this isn't something more serious than irritation, and at the least the vet can give you some salve stuff to put in his eyes to help clear them up. But definitely go to a vet just in case! All kittens should get a check-up as soon as you get them to make sure they're healthy, anyway, even if they seem fine.
Unfortunately with people giving away animals, I don't think you'll have any luck asking this woman to even help with the bill if it is something more serious. Good luck!

It could be the carpet fresh causing the irritation. Its probably best to take the kitten to the vet, some eye irritations can be very painful and dangerous.

Hi, When I got my kitten 5 months ago one of his eyes was abit crusty but it was just sleep on his eye.Bath his eyes with a wet warm cotton wool pad (one for each eye ) I don't know how she can be sure that's what was causing it,and if that's the reason ,why did she continue to use this product. If it doesn't clear up or if he starts to sneeze take him to the vet because he might be starting with a cold of flu.

Yeah it can...Your friend should really take the kitten to a vet soon b/c there might be a infection and the cat could loose it eye or it could just have prob with its eye for the rest of its life. I use to have a cat that before I got him he had lost his eye b/c it got infected with something like that.. So yeah you should just take the kitten to a good vet before it gets worse..

I suppose it's possible but it sounds like some kind of infection to me . Is his nose also crusty? What color is the crust/goop in the eye yellow or green indicates an infection, regardless since it is a new kitten vet check and shots is one of the first things your friend should do .

It could be. If you have some eye drops.... can be just regular human kind rinse out his eyes......
If that doesn't help the kitten may need to be seen by a vet.

I'm not sure.
But use polysporin eye drops.
I used those when my kitten had an eye infection and it cleared up within days.
