Most dogs are naturally happy. However, they may sleep 18 hours a day and be a little sluggish during the day.
Otherwise, if he eats well, if he runs around, and if he is enthusiastic, then he is happy. My dog is content, relaxed, and very happy... and he rarely wags his tail for me. But he usually holds his tail up and his ears up. I think that he smiles and sometimes laughs.

Upon greeting him/her, mouth usually open , tongue protruding, tail upright and wagging rapidly, responds to affection with face licks and enthusiasm, comes bounding when u call it`s name, carries toys in mouth or a ball he wants u to throw so he can retrieve, follows u about, wants belly rubs and back of ears scratched. I would say most of these signs mean ur dog is content and happy.

It doesn't take that much to please a dog. If you keep him warm and dry and free from too many fleas, if you talk to him and let him know you love him, then he's happy.
He's ENORMOUSLY happy. He's happier than you will ever be.
It's sort of like being married. It's a lot simpler than people realize, and doesn't generally involve fleas.

That's easy, they are playful full of bounce and most of all they wag their tail when they are happy. If they are sad or something is wrong their tail goes between their legs.

if he wags his tail when he sees you
his ears are usually pricked up
he plays with others or even by himself (chewing a ball etc)
his tail is upright and not between his legs
he listens to you when you call him
if he isnt happy he will usually sleep alot
