I went to a few pages and I found one that I like. potty-training-puppies- now (dot) com. But, do these books work? I went to the library but the books seem to have old content. Has any one been to this site or bought from them before I buy?

Save yourself the money of buying a book. Search for Crate training for puppies on the net. This is by far the best way to house train a puppy.

Let me save you some $$$ on books. 1st you need to determine how long you should expect your puppy to "hold it". Take the number of months your puppy is and add 1 this number should determine the maximum number of hours your puppy should hold it. ie. Puppy is 2 months old, then he should be able to hold it for 3 hours max.

Next, feed your puppy everyday (3 times) at the same time. Give your puppy 20 minutes to eat/drink then take away. This will teach your puppy that you are the boss and that he needs to eat when food is provided and not graze all day. After he finish eating, wait another 20 minutes then let him out. Tell him "go potty" and when he does, quietly say "good dog" then give him a treat. Let your dog out first thing in the morning, before bed, after every nap, and after playing for 30 minutes. If your puppy is indoors, you do not need to leave water out. This will help you monitor when the puppy needs to go. If you ever see your puppy start sniffing around in circles, immediately take him outside and say "go potty". If he gets into position while in the house, make a loud noise to startle it then say "outside" and when he is out tell him "go potty". If you ever find a mess but did not see him do it, just clean it up and forget about it. Your puppy will not know he did anything wrong unless you are correcting him while he is doing it. Never hit your dog because he will fear you and may start peeing whenever he sees you out of fear. Never give your puppy run of the house until he has completely earned your trust. Always watch him while he is still in training. If you want to teach your dog to ring the bell to go out, leave a bell hanging at the door and ring it everytime before you open the door to let him out. This way he will associate ringing the bell means he gets to go out. When he gets the hang of the sound, start teaching him to ring it with his nose.
Good luck. My puppy is 3 months old and it is working for me. Also, crate training is another great method to use when you cannot watch your puppy. Make sure the crate is just big enough for the puppy to lay and stand. If you get one that is too big, he will do his business in one end and sleep in the other. If your puppy is still young, then just like a baby, you will need to get up in the middle of the night and take him out. Remember, always be consistent with your puppy when training...even in the middle of the night.

One more tip, if your puppy is taking to long to go potty, make him run around. The exercise will get his system going faster so that he will want to go. If he still doesn't go, put him back in the crate, wait a few minutes then let him out again. Do not let him in the house until after he goes potty. This will be part of his reward.

I highly recommend anything by Ian Dunbar.... and his material, which is considered to be on the forefront... may be 30 years old for some things....

What all methods should tell you is that pups want a clean bed and meal area. Therefore, they will look for a distant toilet area... based on smell. So, you should lead them to an area, and put a little of their smell where you want them to go... ... Wash accidents with vinegar, not ammonia (ammonia smells like urine)... And recognize that puppies can hold it only 1 hour for every month of age...
