In the past the last few jobs I've had they didn't check references. I have no good professional references because all the managers I have had, I never kept in touch with. Places I worked for went out of business or the managers quit and we didn't keep in touch. I have a job now but it's very little money so I applied for something full time again. A managerial position and they called for an interview the very next day. The interview is this weekend and I would love to get this job but I am concerned about the references issue because if they can't check references other than friends and one old co-worker is that a strike against me for the job?

Don't worry about that, I think employers will hire you for your skills and qualifications. Just have your references ready just in case they ask. And don't worry if they're friends and co-workers (those are mine too). If ever they get in touch with your references, they would just ask or confirm stuff you said in the interview or what you've written in your resume, and sometimes about your personality and your work ethics. Not to worry, your references will back you up with that big time!

But most employers don't ask!!. In my personal experience, they never contacted the references I wrote in my resume but still they hired me. So don't worry about it. Just prove to them you're the right one for the job.

Goodluck!

Do All Employers Check References

It completely depends on the employer. In my case, I usually only contact references if the person seems less than genuine on their resume. You generally learn all you need to know about a person through a face to face or phone interview. If I have concerns about an applicant after that, I may talk to their references...or reject them entirely.

it depends on the employer... i would recommend that to avoid this delimma in the future, get letters of reference from employers/co-workers and submit copies of these (you do not have to submit originals and this gives you some credibility).

just a thought... do you have any personal friends that are business owners/managers, etc. that can speak to your areas of strength that they have seen?... all of them do not have to be from your previous employers... i hope that this helps

Put teachers, clergy, even relatives if you have to. If you haven't worked before than that will be fine.
