From the sound of it, you're a parent trying to figure out what to buy for your child(ren). You also mentioned wanting something less expensive. Well then I think the Nintendo Wii is for you. It's considerably less expensive than the others and the games are geared more towards young kids. Two things: it won't play DVD movies out of the box, and the graphics aren't quite up to par with xbox 360 and playstation 3. But a young child probably wouldn't notice the difference. The teenagers are the ones obsessed with graphics. And the Nintendo Wii will play gamecube games also, as well as many nintendo games from even farther back (SNES, NES, for example).

Choosing between Xbox 360 and PS3 (disregarding Wii), I'd have to say PS3. It's the most expensive, but I think it's the strongest system out of the bunch, both in performance and lasting appeal. It think the PS3 is what will have all the best games out of the current generation.

Almost a third of XBOX 360 are malfunctioning right from the start. PS3 return rate is only around 3%.
Let's compare them

PS3 has 7+1 kernels in Cell processor, Xbox 360 -only 3x2
PS3 uses advanced tech called Blu-Ray, one disc can store up to 50 gb (in the future - up to 200 gb), Xbox 360 - regular dual DVD (9.5 gb).
Calculations per sec - PS3 - 51-billion-dot-product-operati... per second
Xbox 360 - 33.6-billion-dot-product-opera... per second
PS3 has full media support - USBs, built-in card reader (except 20 gb version), ability to use printer and so on.
Xbox 360 has USBs and only 2 memory slots.
PS3 supports up to 7 Bluetooth Controllers
Xbox 360 - up to 4 Controllers
PS3 - wi-fi included (except 20 gb version)
Xbox 360 - wi-fi will cost you around 100 $

Xbox 360 is widely known for so-called "red ring of doom" problem - it gets overheated easily. My PS3 was running for more than 8 hours non-stop with no problems. Sometimes Xbox 360 becomes so overheated, that thermopaste on CPU melts, drips on motherboard and successfully shortcircuits it.

Besides all of this, I've seen disassembled Xbox 360 - regular PC architecture - Billy Gates is an uninventive nerd (as usual).
When I saw disassembled PS3 - it was a surprise - smart architecture, good cooling (don't buy external PS3 coolers - they make everything worse - original system is good), etc.

In 2008 we'll get more than 300 games, including Metal Gear Solid 4 and other great exclusives.

PS3 online world will be free, Xbox 360 - you have to pay.

In some countries people call Xbox 360 "Coffin 360".

The funniest thing, that right now there are no games for PS3, that show full potential of the console.

Sony expects PS3 to stay on the market for, at least, 7-10 years.

I didn't mention Wii, because it's so weak, no point to talk about it.

Best is a definition that is objective, it all depends on what you mean by best. I'll break it all down for you though, then you can come to your own decision which is best for you.

Best could mean, the largest library of games, currently that's the 360, no doubt their library is the largest of the current generation of consoles.

Best could mean, the cheapest to get into the house. That would be the Wii, currently the cheapest of all current generation systems (although the hardware level is actually closer to last generation than this).

Best could mean the best built and most functional machine, that would be the Sony PS3. Built in hard drive in all systems, built in blu-ray drive means True HD movies on blu-ray, free online play.

Now pros and cons of each system:

Pros: 360 has the largest libary of games, some of the most well regarded games (Halo, Gears of War, etc...), and developers have had the machine longer than any other current gen system, so they're able to push the limits of the hardware (which they are currently doing with some of these current games). HD gaming, and currently the best (although you pay for it) online gaming experience of the current gens. 3 Year Warranty (also a con, explained later).

Wii: The least expensive of the machines, has more games than any other console geared towards kids and families. Mario, Mario, Mario and more Mario. Only system you're going to find some of these titles, anything Mario.

PS3: The most powerful and versatile system of the current gens. Blu-Ray means HD movies, HD Gaming, free online play, downloads available, 60GB or 80GB Hard drive to save game data. Some of the best looking games ever made (Heavenly Sword), and lots of titles coming within the next few months. Built-in wi-fi, built-in bluetooth (for controllers and headsets, mice, keyboards, etc...).

Cons:
360: Most unreliable system of the current gens, at least a 30% failure rate on all Xbox 360s manufactured. So many problems with these machines, Microsoft had to extend the warranty for the 'Red Rings of Death' to 3 years to avoid multiple class action lawsuits. Developers have started to switch from the 360 being their lead platform, for a couple of reasons, one being the size of the media, only about 9GB data can fit on the disc. Several developers have commented that it just wasn't enough room.
When all of the costs are added up to compare with a PS3, it's actually more expensive than a PS3. Xbox Live (one of the best features of the 360, costs money, you have to pay to play).

Wii: Games are mainly kiddy titles, except for a few, Metroid, Manhunt 2. Cheap machine (made cheaply), controls are gimmiky.

PS3: Most expensive of the current gen systems out of the box. Small native library (currently).
