I don't really think anything will happen. Nothing about human biology has convinced me we've got a "soul" tucked away inside us somewhere, or that any part of our personality resides outside of the brain.
But I could be wrong.
Maybe some type of "energy" we possess might continue...however I don't think this energy would be anything we could call a "self." Maybe our energy becomes one with the universe or something...that's a nice thought.
However the concepts of Heaven and Hell, "higher beings" and reincarnation, to me....all smack of human interference. So simplistic, so black and white, so....meaningless.
In short, I think it's possible some part of us survives, but not something that would be a conscious representation of our present selves.

When Adam and Eve broke God's law, thus rejecting God
as their sovereign, they were told that they would
"return to the ground, for out of it they were taken."
God emphasized to Adam: "For dust
you are and to dust you will return." (Genesis 3:19)
The idea that we have an immortal 'soul' that lives on
in an afterlife, if one is to study intently the
scriptures, is not Biblical, but based on false
religious doctrines.
"However much God may give his spirit to frail man,
and however exalted the resurrected Jesus has become,
man, from the biblical point of view, is dust animated
by spirit, and not body and separable soul, which is a
Greek idea. 'Human Being' by definition denoted
mortality, subject to frailty and death. 'It is
appointed unto man once to die...' (Heb 9:27)." The
Doctrine of the Trinity-Christianity's Self-Inflicted
Wound by Anthony Buzzard/Charles F. Hunting.
W.E. Vine-Vine's Expository Dictionary states this
about the words translated 'spirit' in the Holy
Bible...
psyche-"denotes the breath, the breath of life."
pneuma-primarily denotes "the wind" (akin to pneo, "to
breathe, blow"); also "breath;"
With a greater understanding of original languistic
meaning, it is easier to see what various Bible
passages are truly saying. For example, is Psalm 145:4
really saying that we have an immortal soul or spirit
that lives on after death, or is it telling us,
as the psalmist states, that at death man stops
breathing (his spirit goes out) and dies, he "goes
back to his ground; and in that day his thoughts do
perish." (Psalm 146:4}?
So, what happens to those who reject God, his
righteous standards, and His means for which we can
attain salvation? The same thing that has always
happened to mankind. They die, they go back to their
graves, their thoughts perish. The question should be,
what happens to all those who loved God, and served
him wholeheartedly, but have long since passed away?
Was that life all there was for them? Absolutely not!
John 8:28 states, "Do not be amazed at this, for a
time is coming when all who are in their graves will
hear his voice 29and come out--those who have done
good to a resurrection of life,"...
Gods' original purpose for mankind, as set out in the
Garden of Eden has not changed. And Satans challenge
to Gods' sovereignty by swaying Adam to sin will not
prevent God from carrying out his purpose. Those in
Gods memory will be resurrected, brought back to life,
and given the grand gift that Adam and Eve threw away,
eternal life. Then will be fulfilled the scriptures:
Rev. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne
saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he
will live with them. They will be his people, and God
himself will be with them and be their God. 4 He will
wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more
DEATH or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order
of things has passed away."
Psalm 37:10 For yet a little while, and the evildoers
will be no more; though you look with care where they
used to be, they will not be found. 11 But the meek
[in the end] shall inherit the earth and shall delight
themselves in the abundance of peace.

Be asma Allah, The Only God for all (human and others), Enamoured The most, The most Humane.
Hi, may God Blessing you anytimes.
"What happens after death ?"
For our info, after created, we will never death !
We have created by The Only Creator Allaah and "put" on earth with a mission to become a "Representative for the God" to others we meet anytimes.
If the God have some any Excellent characters, we must have the best one as our competency that given to us by the God based on the creation specifications.
So do not worry about "heaven, hell, etc". The heaven is our goal or our home. Hell only tools or resource for us or only appliance to sanctify ourself to be come holy again.
Before the sanctify process will done, there many way obtaining pardon of Allah in order not to be processed in hell before we met our the only God directly "person-to-person".
How do we can obtain any pardon from the only God ?
(1). Firstly, you must know what and who your God realy.
(2). Secondly, you must come to the God yourself or with any Khalifah which can help you to meet Him the only God.
(3). Third, you must know what the mission must done by yourself on this earth.
OK, that the brief and hope satisfying you for a moment before we meet again sometimes and somewhere.
Your Brother on earth by the name of Allah.

The judgment where you will be sent to an eternal heaven or hell.
"And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment." (Hebrews 9:27)
"For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad." (2 Corinthians 5:10)

I am a Muslim and this is what we believe happens after death:
You go to the grave. If you did good in your life ( and is a muslim) then your grave becomes like a heaven for you until the day of judgement (day of resurrection). If you didn't do good in life (didn't believe in God and did bad things) then you go to your grave and it becomes a hole of hell for you until the day of judgement. Then when the day of judgement comes, the good people go to heaven and the bad people go to hell. In the end, all people have one of two destinies, heaven or hell.

If your asking a scientific question or a beliefs question both parties are wrong. No one has ever returned from the dead to tell us what happend...
So each person is going to have to decide about death.
many in india believe in reincarnation.
the christian belief is eternal life with streets of gold
The muslims get virgins.
Scientist believe your brain is your soul, and when your body shuts down and your brain shuts down You no longer are a liveing being and you cease to exist, and are dust in the wind.
You have to decide on your own what you belive is going to happen to you when you die...

Honestly? I rarely think about it.
Life begins and it ends. There is nothing I will or can do to stop it. I live for my life NOW. I'll worry about death when I die. I trust my gods and my ancestors to take care of me.
