If you know about anti-depression meds or have taken them before maybe you could help answer this questions.
In anyones opinion. I have 3 questions below...
I'll say this again, "opinion" about the medications below, so please no people, talking about "getting high" on the drugs -OR- saying go talk to your doctor, I have talked and I have a bunch of doctors.
1. Which of the following anti-depression medicines are best?
2. Which of the following anti-depression meds worked best for you, and why?
3. What is the major difference between med #3, med #4, med #5 ?
Anti-Depression Medications
#1 Celexa (Citalopram)
#2 Paxil (Paroxetine)
#3 Elivil (Amitriptyline)
#4 Remeron EQ (Mirtazapine)
#5 Trazodone HCL
Thank for anyones answer in advance.

I've tried many anti-depressant meds and the one that worked the best for me was Prozac.
Elavil is a tricyclic antidepressant and the other's are not.
Remeron is a tetracyclic antidepressant.
DESYREL (trazodone hydrochloride) is an antidepressant chemically unrelated to tricyclic, tetracyclic, or other known antidepressant agents
Celexa and Paxil are both SSRI's.

I would find a professional counselor, not a social worker, to talk to while you taper off the medication. One thing that people fail to realize is that anti-depressants don't work for everyone. There is no magic pill to make you feel better when the situations around you are actually causing the problems. The pill doesn't make a bad job go away. Unless you are taking a narcotic and completely comatose, you will still have problems to deal with. Yet, the pill is always the first try to fix a problem that ends up having to be dealt with anyway. You can't trust your doctor to determine if you need the medication or not, because they prescribe these medications like candy for kicks from the drug reps. As I said earlier, I would talk to a professional counselor, preferably one with knowledge of anti-depressant/anxiety medications. They can monitor your progress and determine if you need to be back on the medication or not.

1. If one was "best" we would only have one. What works for one person might not work for another. Paxil was the best for me.
2. Paxil.
3. Remeron is relatively new. Elavil is the oldest of the three; it's also used for pain relief sometimes. Trazodone has been around for a pretty long time. That's about all I know.

Let's see, I've taken paxil, prozac, celexa, effexor, cymbalta, wellbutrin. so I have a pretty good idea on these things lol. I do not know about numbers 3-5, i haven't even heard of them. but
1. I'd say Paxil and Celexa.
2. Paxil worked the best for me because it also helped me out of social anxiety as well as depression. It uplifted me and was great.
3. I don't know anthing about those three, sorry.

I like Celexa, it's the only one I've taken. It works well. I had a bf on paxil and he got really weird eye movement from it. I have no experience with the last three, but I heard from others that trazadone is serious stuff with addictive problems.

medications work differently for each individual, so it's difficult to spot a 'best' medication. just because paxil works for your Aunt Lucy, doesn't mean it's going to work for you.
zoloft worked best for me; however, i can no longer take anti-depressants because they cause me to become manic.
If you want to know the major differences and uses for these medications, do a yahoo search on them individually.
and talk to your doctor about the different drugs, if you are considering an anti-dep med.

Beware of Elivil. I gained 50 pounds on it in 6 months.
My boyfriend is bipolar and he takes Trazodone for sleep. At first he had a hard time waking up in the morning, but eventually got used to it.

I haven't taken any anti-depressants (yet), but from being around people who have/do, I can tell you that nobody's experience is going to help you. Everybody's brain is different, and those medications work differently for everyone. The only real way to know which is best for you is to have your doctor guide you through trying them.

Well I took effexor in high school, it helped with my anxiety & depression. It just made me not care as much about stupid things & I was able to be happy & relaxed more.
