why on earth would you think someone with a mental illness is a "bad person"?
mental illnesses are just that -- ILLNESSES... and not unlike diabetes, cancer and a sinus infection, many of them are manageable and treatable.
a person who contracts a mental illness didn't do it on purpose and they can't help it.
bipolar disorder is a mood disorder. it is manageable for the most part.
anxiety and depression go hand-in-hand, and depression can be caused by a life situation or chemical imbalance.
you can find more information about these illnesses if you do a yahoo search on each one... sometimes it does take a little research to find out what the truth is...
people with mental illnesses can function in the world, and they have FEELINGS and families and lives, just like you.
take care

Wow Butterfly. Difficult to answer.
I guess that if the bi-polar/depressed etc. individual KNOWS that their behavior hurts other people, and they don't do anything to change it; then you could say that they are a bad person.
I don't thing anyone is ALL bad though.
I grew up with someone who is definitely bi-polar. He's 80 now, and he has no idea what bi-polar even is, and he doesn't care anyway. He thinks he's perfectly normal. He behaves pretty bad sometimes, but I still wouldn't say he's a BAD person. He has good parts to his personality too.
To call anyone bad like that kind of negates all of their positive attributes.
I think the best you can do is be understanding, and protect yourself when any person starts to display "bad" character traits.

No. My second oldest daughter is bipolar. Through medication and medical help you would never know that she has been through some pretty rough stuff in her life. If mental illness makes someone bad, then the majority of the human race is bad in some form or other.

no! It absolutely does not mean that anyone is bad.
as a matter of fact , it just means that the person has a problem. If someone is experiencing these kinds of symptoms then they can either talk to their doctor or call a council er or a mental health clinic if there is a problem sometimes medication may be needed. If a person works on it sometimes you can be pretty much just like everyone else. No one even knows that there is a problem.

Absolutely not. This is not something a person can control, it is caused by a chemical imbalance. Having a mental disorder isn't voluntary. A lot of the time syndromes like Bipolar disorder are hereditary, they can be passed on in genes. You shouldn't think that it is bad, or feel guilty.

Oh goodness, I hope not. I suffer from depression and anxiety. I have fought depression all my life. I have been hospitalized for it. I went through therapy and I take meds. I manage it now. I don't think I'm a bad person, just a person who happens to need a little help.
If you think you have one of these disorders, please go to your family doctor. My husband carried me to mine and I am so glad he did. I might not be here now if he thought I was a bad person because I had a disorder.
Good luck.

of course not. it is not their fault having those illnesses and if they happen to do wrong things, as normal beings we should be the ones who understand them most.
