It is a version of the hemi. Hemi is the term dubbed by dodge for the hemispherical combustion chamber. Although it was created by the Dodge boys, Ford and Chevy have their own versions of it. Of course, their is nothing Dodge, Chevy or Ford in any of the respective companies motors!! Basicly the only thing Ford on a funny car is the logo, and the (very) rough shape of the body.

Here is a run down of one. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funny_Car

Nothing in the engine is even remotely related to a Ford or Dodge production part. The engine is based on the hemi engine design, but it's all aftermarket parts and pieces developed over the years to produce the power and take the abuse.

Hemisperical combuston chamber motor. Not "HEMI" All AA dragster and Funny car motor designs evolved from the old 426 hemi. I can assure you there is no mopar parts left. Keth Black a leading designer and builder is where I would check for details of modern dragster motors.

They are 500 cubic inch aluminum blocks based loosely on the 426 Hemi engine. They run on a mixture of 10-15% alcohol and 85-90% nitromethane. They are estimated to make approximately 8,000 horsepower and 7,000 ft/lbs of torque.
