What do the two have to do with each other ?

Social security is a self funded program.

It doesn't use general fund tax revenue.

All of SS problems come from one point and only one point.

When SS was first started, there were 15 people paying SS tax;s for every person collecting SS.

Today, there are 7 people paying SS tax's for every person collecting SS.

In 40 years, there will only be 3 people paying SS tax;s, for every person collecting SS.

Our population is getting older, the life expectancy has increased from 50 yrs olds in 1930 to 75 years old today.

So something need to change the funding mechanism for SS.

One of 4 things will need to be done.

1. raise the retirement age
2. cut benefits
3. increase the payroll SS tax
4. increase the maximum taxed income.

The sooner, any of those is done, the better off SS will be.

Social security is not 300 trillion in debt. Social security actually runs a surplus. The problem will come when I stops running a surplus and we have to collect all those IOUs that are owed the non-existent trust fund. We'll have to raise general revenues to pay back social security.

Face it, social security is a pyramid scheme. Throughout history, pyramid schemes must ultimately fail. Social security is no exception. I've been paying into that rat hole for 39 years (my statement shows that they collected $3.00 from my 1968 wages) and I've written off my contribution as a forced bad investment. I'm saving everything I can for my retirement and planning on working until I drop dead. I recommend you do the same thing.

Edit: Therealnapster is clueless about what he is talking about. The national debt in 2000 was right around $6 trillion. What was occurring is that the government was not running a deficit.

Watch those numbers. If I count your offspring for a long enough time you will reach 1,000,000. Don't you think there is one that would support you in your old age.

Actually its what I call the hate game in politics. In the past the parties would go into smoke filled room and split the difference between their positions. Now you have so much hate between parties that neither will give an inch. Thats what blocked immigration reform, Social Security reform, Health Care reform etc. There must be some way for us to use the divisions between the Sunni and Shite Muslims to get all the Arab states to help police the divide or find a peace settlement. But Bush did not seek other Muslim nations in the beginning to agree to help after we won the battle.

It's amazing that there's actually a person living in the U.S. that, after all that has been going on, can't spell "Iraq".

Anyway, "we" are not all supporting the war. It's the government, and while I don't AGREE with the war, I do support the troops. They're just doing their jobs. I could count the number of soldiers on one hand that I've met that want to be part of the war and all that's going on.

Like I said, there isn't a whole lot we can do. Protest, rally, write letters to the government, or run for president/congress yourself. I wouldn't recommend the latter though... Iraq is probably something you should be able to spell first. However, I give you kudos for being concerned and aware of what's going on.

To receive interest is haram, but when we pay mortgages and loans, yes we have to pay interest, unfortunately how can we buy a house without a mortgage, so we have no choice but to pay interest, well in the old days we did not have banks that provide for muslims, there are now few banks that have opened and understands our needs, so interest is not charged, how it is worked out i don't know. If we live in a country and house prices are unaffordable we can pay a mortgage, if you have no choice, if you have interest we are not allowed to spend it, we have to give to charity. We are in the month of our fasting, this is when we are charitable. and about the other benefits, if people are claiming benefits unlawfully that is haram too, well that is on their shoulders, I am a single mum, with two kids, i am on Tax credits, but i work and pay my taxes, i don't cheat the system. If people cheat the system then that is haram, forbidden, playing the lottery is too, hey, we are all not perfect.
