Okay, so we all know we are gonna die. If I truly believed there was only this life and nothing after, I think I would be very depressed most of the time.

Well, death isn't the most pleasant thought in the world, but there's nothing we can do about it. I try not to think about dying any more than I actually have to.
The idea of nothingness is really not all that scary. It's not like we'll know the difference.

Not all atheists believe that there is nothing after Death. Buddhists certainly don't believe this, and they are atheists.

Why is it that so many people do not understand that "Atheist" means only a disbelief in a God, not a disbelief in everything spiritual.

While there are many atheists that do not believe in life after death, it is by no means all of them.

As far as not becoming depressed, believing that there is no life after death is a fine motivation for living life to the fullest. Unlike Christians who might believe the next life to be the most important, atheists who believe in one single life are motivated to make a difference in THIS world. THIS life is the one that matters. What's depressing about that?

In fact, I presume that atheists would be better adjusted and prepared for death. There is no question such as "Do I really, really, really believe?", "Will God really accept me?", "Did I really give my heart and soul", "Have I committed the unpardonable sin", and so on.

Why would that depress you? It makes life MORE valuable. There was a whole lot of time before I was born and the world will get along just fine when I'm gone. I am not vain enough to need to believe I will always exist to be happy. I am just thankful I got a chance to experience life in the first place. Who am I to demand everlasting life as a condition for happiness?

No hope of Heaven, no fear of Hell, so you might as well make the most of the time you get. Life is too short to worry about death.

FWIW I'm a Deist, but the above applies to me as well.

No, I'd say I was more worried and focused on death when I was a Christian than now. Understand, I'm not excited by the possiblity of an early death, but when I'm old(er) it will be time to leave.

Thats why it is called Life and not waiting for death, 'cause that would just be depressing.

Can I ask how you can get excited about life when you expect Heaven?

Basically, I dont dwell on death. If I did, Im sure Id get depressed too. So instead, I concentrate on LIFE.

Some people find it depressing to think that this beautiful life is relegated to nothing more than some test to see if you can avoid hell or not.

Living in reality sure beats living for ignorance.

How do theists keep from getting hopelessly depressed about being stupid?

oh yeah.....ignorance is bliss.
