You already know romaji. Romaji is the Roman alphabet. You don't need to learn that again. :)

If you want to write well in Japanese, you'll have to learn hiragana, katakana, and kanji. It doesn't take long to learn to read hiragana and katakana if you study. If you study them for about an hour everyday for a week, you should have it memorized by the time the week is up.

Learning kanji is not difficult, but it takes time and effort. To seriously learn how to read kanji, you should practice writing around ten different kanji ten times a night. Every week or so you should review. After a few months, you'll have enough knowledge to start reading simple manga. After a year or two, you might be able to read a newspaper, if you don't stop studying!

I will tell you now that romaji will do you no good. My sensei stressed that using romaji as a crutch is a no-no...

For starters, you might want to start with katakana first and then progress to hiragana. Katakana is much simpler and you'll at least see it quite a bit in Nihongo. Then progress onto hiragana slowly. It'll take you quite some time to get used to reading/writing in both hiragana and katakana progressively, but if you just work at the application (read and write -- a lot) and stay on track, you'll be moving on to kanji.

If you're looking to learn how to read a newspaper, then you really have no other choice than to learn the remaining three (Nihongo has 'four' written systems if you include romaji): katakana, hiragana, and kanji.

Also, if you learn the other two, learning kanji will be a little easier for you. There are many kanji with radicals that resemble hiragana or katakana characters, like guchi (katakana 'ro').

But, romaji is just a no-no.

The other ways. Romaji won't do you any good. It's not used in Japan for signs, books, newspapers, etc. and only exists for Westerners who are too lazy to just learn hiragana/katakana first.

If you are interested on learning Japanese correctly, then you would have to learn the three ways, but if you are just interested on knowing how to speak the language then just romaji is okay, but you won't be able to read nor write.

good luck.
