Well, I am no psychologist, but you'll find quite a few people who feel that way. Some aren't willing to admit it and don't always refer to themselves as slaves, but I think that it's common.
You're probably just bored with your everyday life and that usually means that you are most likely not doing exactly what you want to do. If you were, you would be more content, but you're not and wonder if there is more to life and the world than what you're doing.
I feel the same way sometimes. I know that I'm not doing what I would want to be doing, but still allow myself to continue with my daily routine, even though I long for a different one. The good news is that I have at least started thinking about changing my routine and it seems like you're thinking about it too. I think that's pretty good for both of us.
I would suggest that you stop being so hard on yourself for one thing and start thinking about what really makes you happy. Don't complain either. Complaining never gets you anywhere. It's just an excuse to continue doing nothing and being miserable. Remember, your parents may not necessarily be happy with your decisions, so you will have to learn to be independent in more ways than one. But, that could be exactly what you need.
Maybe you need new friends. Sometimes we outgrow our friends. That could be a small start. Try getting a part time job if you don't already have one and making you're own money. I found that to be a great sense of accomplishment when I was in college. Start off small and see if the small things make a difference.
Good luck!

My husband says something to me very frequently: "Put your hands on the power you have." I tend to not see the power I already have to affect a situation. You aren't a slave, because you won't be killed if you make a choice. You can choose to deviate from your routine, do things differently, and still follow your plan in order to have even more power with which to live when you graduate.
It's all about perspective, dearie, and it's time to remember a few things. Slaves were owned by other people, and the standards of their existence were life and death. The words we use to describe our existence actually shape how we perceive it, so set this word aside right away. Try some new, more accurate words that actually help you deal with the situation.
You're obligated. You have debts to pay to your parents, probably both emotional and financial. Those debts, which you took on, carry significant weight. However, they aren't everything in your life. You may have to dance to that bass line, but you can still decide whether to waltz, mosh, salsa or samba. Take advantage of the opportunity you have and explore. I highly recommend the movie Ferris Buehler's Day Off. My mother was a high school teacher, and when I was in college she insisted I see it every once in a while to remember how to jitterbug in a line dance world.

I felt weird one night at work: it was 2:45 AM - I worked nights, 12 hour shifts, anyway I said "How did I get here?" In the Navy there's a saying: "Pick your rate (job code) - pick your fate." Many a newbie was very unhappy while others were as happy as one can be in the Navy. (Ususally because they had a Navy school, hint)
I think everyone at some point looks at who they are, where they are, etc.
I think it's just a normal mind exercise to look for bettering a long life.
If you at at Duke, no offense, I think you are in the right place at the right time to learn something to be a valued member of your community. That's why you are at university.
I am old - and see you are on a very sound solid path. Please do not be so hard on yourself. Being in university one usually does more than learn they grow, right?
Please be at Peace.
I would suggest talking to your guidance counselor, (or the Duke university system for this).
And of course talk and listen to your parents.
Again Peace.

Well I don't know if you are a Christian or not, but the Bible that we are all slaves. We are either slaves to our sin nature or we are bondservants of Christs. Maybe you could be under conviction of the Holy Spirit. God bless!!!

Maybe you should volunteer at a soup kitchen, or animal shelter, etc. Helping others and staying busy can be very fulfilling and will help you feel better.

Do what you have to do, but try changing up what you do in your spare time. Maybe even the way you live.

Don't worry you are just becoming a philanthropist. It's one of two choices the wealthy have. The other choice is substance abuse.
