I think ignorance is the main culprit.

Most people--whether they call themselves Christian or not--simply do NOT know the difference between religion and spirituality.

Having a relationship with God has NOTHING to do with the church you attend. Churches are mainly social organizations. For those who do not commit themselves to a personal study of faith is allowing whatever church they attend to become their personal decision maker. Those persons who do not study the scriptures INDEPENDENTLY with out the direction of an organization end up adopting whatever they are taught as the "truth".

The Bible is very clear that God will teach you himself if you only seek Him.

John 6:45, "It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me."

And please tell me an organization out there that really, whole heartedly follows what Pure Religion is from this Biblical guideline?

James 1:27, "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world."

God's ways are perfect. Man's ways always, always fall short.

Each and every single person on earth is personally accountable for their own soul before God. If you want to stay ignorant that is a CHOICE you are making.

I am married to an atheist. I have found in my study of different religions that the biggest culprit creating atheism is catholicism. There was an informal poll taken on a web site I frequented for three years and the overwhelming majority (over 2/3rds) of atheists were former catholics.

By insisting the earth is 6,000 years old which is not biblical, yes! A verse toward the end of the NT in one language applied to a verse at the beginning of the bible in the OT in another language? Bad scholarship.

By insisting many other things that are mis interpretations and mis translations, yes!

It is the word of God - Keep going. Some atheists just see the lies and bad teaching in some denominations. Yet some are just intellectual snobs that know better.

I don't know if I'd say that. Maybe in some cases. Most Christians I know who became atheist did so simply because the more they thought about it, the less sense the idea of magical supernatural beings made to them. (This includes myself.) I had a good relationship with all the Christians in my life that were close to me. There were no *people* that drove me to not believe in God.

No, I, like many, was a Christian but made my decision based on the evidence. Even though there are many Christans that make me happy to be an atheist, I realize that these are just the unthinking majority.

Edit:
I'd love to know why the thumbs down on many of these answers (besides the obvious I disagree with atheists). Were they even thinking or reading?

It's not that simple. It's not the religion itself, as I believe the main idea is the same in all religions: "Don't question why, just believe it." It was the questions I had about Christianity, and WHY that pushed me into Atheism, not the actual religion. As it has been said, Christians just remind us WHY we are Atheists.

Yes a lot of Christians do not represent true Christians. Many are selfish and think that if someone is atheist "they will go to hell" which could not be farther from the truth. Because the atheist may be leading a better life than those "Christians" who think they can condemn people to hell. Just ignore them and don't let them affect the way you feel about religion or anythign else for that matter.

If other people are influencing your religious views, you're probably doing something wrong. I don't base my beliefs on the beliefs or actions of others, only what the actual religion says.

No.

I'm a Christian adult. I take responsibility for my own actions, and would encourage atheists to do the same.

Most definitely! If Christians (and Jews and Muslims) weren't so darned PUSHY about their faith, there would be a lot more believers... nobody likes a pushy salesman, whether they're trying to sell you a car or a religion... and like the car sellsman, they don't really want to leave the choice up to you!

if one person with a few words can change your beliefs, you were probably on shaky ground anyway. I like unaffiliated better, no christian to this day has changed my mind, even after they unoffically exorcised me of all wicked or demon possession, or whatever they called it, the devil's hand maybe.
