Today, I entered a store in SE Washington, DC to shop, I had a 4 month old in a stroller. I was immediately stopped by a tall guy, who I guess was the security guard. He said, " You have to take the baby out, and leave the stroller here". I was shocked, I'd never heard anything like that in my life. I said " I guess I can't shop here ", then security guard says, " The other guy, (who I guess works there) will watch the baby". I noticed they didn't have carts for babies, So I left after that, but decided to write the stores address down. Is this LEGAL?????? Please Tell Me.....

that is just very strange...are you sure they worked there?
but i guess a store can do that..some stores here make you leave your bags from other stores with the security as you shop...to ensure you dont put any of their store merchandise in that bag...so probably the same for a stroller...so many compartments on strollers now of days..the store may be having theft issues and see people using strollers as a means.
i'd recommend calling the store to talk to a manger to discuss this matter and get their answer.

Yes, I worked in retail for years, and baby strollers are extremely dangerous to other patrons, and every store has a legal responsibility to protect its customers welfare.
If you could have seen one time when one of our customers fell over a stroller, you would know what I mean. The poor woman was never the same after wards.

Private property is private property. A business (not a government agency) can restrict how and when people can enter their business . I believe that federal civil rights laws prevent businesses from excluding persons based on race and religion but I don't think that protection extends to strollers. It's certainly bad business to exclude customers with strollers and you have asserted your right to choose not to do business with them anymore. Unless your municipality has an ordinance preventing businesses from excluding strollers you have no further recourse except to complain to the manager/owner of the store. Be sure to tell your friends about what happened and encourage them to boycott this business too.

Its their store, so unless there is an ordinance there to prohibit it. It would be legal. But a nice letter to the editor of a local paper and if its a chain to their headquarters Might get them to change their minds. By the way, you might sit outside the store for awhile and see if they treat all people with strollers the same way, if not they are discriminating.

No this is not legal and if a stranger offered to watch your baby then their really is a problem, I would be going to see the store manager or better yet get a hold of their corporate office and threaten to sue , something is wrong here.

Shoplifting using the old baby tactic is extremely common.
Shop owners have the right to refuse to sell to anyone.
Why would you wish to start something up like this?

I can't see why it would be illegal. Not the best for customer relations, but not illegal.
