During her acceptance speech at the Emmy's, Kathy Griffin said the following:
"A lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus. Suck it, Jesus. This award is my god now!"
The Miracle Theater in Pigeon Forge, TN, saw it fit to pay $90,440 for a one-time full-page ad in USA Today to proclaim "Enough is enough".
A friend said it best with the following analogy:
Should married people be offended if she had said: "A lot of people come up here and thank their spouse for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than my ex-husband. Suck it, Matt. This award is my hubby now!"?
Jesus said that if someone struck your right cheek, that you should turn and offer him the other (if right cheek was being struck, this implies a slap to the face which would've been considered a severe attack on one's dignity). I must have missed the part about buying adspace to slander them

While I understand it's their money to spend however they like, Jesus told his followers they should sell their material possessions and give to the poor. I think this $90,440 could've been better spent helping the poor. Spending it to scold a comedian for what she's spent the last 20+ years doing seems like such a waste.

This is not a rant. I shared my opinion and asked for the opinions of everyone else here and I'm getting quite a few, so thanks to those of you who offered yours.

First of all, there was more to that speech than just those four lines. There was a whole comedic bit.
Second, if anyone knows Kathy, they know she was raised Catholic, and her humor is exactly that...crude and in your face.
Third, she was mocking the celebrities, not god. Celebrities get up on those stages and thank god/jesus all the time, knowing darn well that they haven't seen the inside of a church since the last celebrity wedding!!! Wouldn't your god be more upset at the people who are falsely identifying themselves as followers of his word than someone that made a joke calling them out?
With all the horrible things that go on in the world...like war, hate crimes (CRIMES...not words...like homosexuals getting beat up by "christians" that HATE them...), poverty....don't you think that your god has a little more to worry about than a joke?
Personally, I think that any higher power that exists probably has a sense of humor.
As for the Miracle Theatre, their "ad" was half of a page of saying enough is enough, and ANOTHER half of a page with pictures, addresses, phone numbers, and websites for their company.
If you truelly wanted to spend that money to raise "awareness" and say enough is enough, then why don't you simply leave it at that with a small bit saying who you were. Instead, they used that ad to cash in on someone else's celebrity to advertise THEMSELVES....and it worked. Everyone and their mom has heard of this little theater in Pigeon Forge now.
This whole thing is ridiculous!

Your friend said etc. etc. etc..........That is a horrible comparison!! My spouse is not my Creator, and I would never tell my husband those words, and I certainly would not mock / curse the Higher power. You know, atheists are always ranting that Christians are hateful, narrow-minded, and disrespectful. Well isn't that the pot calling the kettle black! They take any and every opportunity to spit in God's face and rally their unprecedented hatred with no thought or respect to others. They want respect?? Then start learning how to give it. Christians standing up and counter-voicing an attack against our Lord is not wrong. We are called to be defenders of the faith, and turning the other cheek DOES NOT mean rolling over and playing dead like a great many Believer's have done.

I didn't know what you were talking about then I looked for it...As a christian, her comment made my stomach lurch a second, but I am more appalled that a christian group wasted that money that could have actually helped someone! I do not expect better behavior from Kathy Griffin but I do from others professing to love Christ.

most sound stewardship by christians...$90,440 would do a lot for feeding the poor...
ms griffin was just making a funny about all the godless performers that are thanking god left and right... too bad so many don't have enough of a sense of humor to understand it.

Whoever paid $90,440 to respond to a speech given at the Emmy's really needs to get a hobby.

Well, I guess that is between them and God, about what they spent, just as Kathy's offensive speech is between she and God. And, I for one, wouldn't want to be in her shoes on Judgment Day! We Christians need to pray that she will repent and COME to Jesus!!

Some religious people keep forgetting that we have something called free speech in the US.
They need to get over themselves and allow everyone equal rights - something else this country was founded on.

I'm a Christian, and I was appalled by her speech. I was pleased to hear that they edited parts of it.
Why is it that if someone famous bashes a homosexual, they are ostracized (and rightfully so!). I don't condone that either. But if someone bashes a religious group, people defend that person, proclaim free speech, blah blah blah. People, that's called a double standard. You can't have it both ways.

I never thought she was funny until that statement.
That and I liked the 'Jerry Seinfeld is the Devil' routine. But I don't think she wrote that.
