Okay so I have been screwed over twice at work in less than 3 weeks. The first time I got asked the day before to work on a day I was supposed to get off(which I was gonna use to catch up on my studying) and it turns out that the day I was asked to work, somebody else who was SUPPOSED to be there wasnt and they werent sick.

Then this monday I was supposed to leave at a certain time but because somebody else had a "migrane", I had to stay extra and that just so happened to be the day before a test. Now I had the chance to just go as I was supposed to but decided to not be so self-centered and stay. By the way, the person who was supposed to be there that monday didnt exactly look sorry about what happened and they knew what my situation was.

So now that I know what could happen, Im deliberately not gonna get a cell phone and I wont answer my house phone.

If they need an extra person there because its busy then I could understand, but I dont feel like having to fill somebody else's spot because "they're sick" when I plan to use that on studying for tests Im gonna have. On both occasions I had a test the following week or day and had to give it up.

And then the day I did ask to get off(and it was a legitimate reason) I couldnt, instead I had to switch days so I could get that day off and work on another one. So am I wrong for doing this? Its not that I dont want to work extra, but more that I dont feel like changing my study hours cause somebody else wants to go elsewhere or doesnt wanna work that day.

Sorry if its a misunderstanding, the problem isnt the employer, its those two people and I just dont wanna risk going through that again. Its only happened twice though so its not like its been like that forever. I just dont want the risk of getting called in because somebody whos supposed to be there isnt.

Your study time is just as important as someone else being sick. In a time like that you have to look out for number one and saying "no" does not make you self-centered. Unfortunately, in the working world, the only person looking out for you is you. So when they request you stay late say no even if you can because too many times people take the nice people for granted and use them until there is nothing left. If you are not scheduled to work you do not need an explanation as to why you can't pull work on unscheduled hours just so you have other obligations even if you don't its none of their business anyway what you do outside of work.

I'm so tired of companies taking advantage of the good employees. Dont stand for it anymore. Companies will never be remorseful for walking over you so don't allow them too. I hope your situation gets better! Good Luck!

Wow that's frustrating. If you are at work and they ask you to stay and you have to study you should be very adamant that you have to study - if they don't understand that I think you should find an employer who does understand. I have never given my cell phone number to any employer and never will and I have caller ID at home and I am under no obligation to answer my phone. It seems as if you employer should find some more reliable workers and not just depend on you to cover for all the slackers.

You're not obligated to get a cell phone. You should probably keep answering your house phone, though. Your boss might call to say that things are kind of slow and you don't need to come in, and then you would come to work for nothing.

Seriously though, if you're not scheduled to work, go to the library and study, and if you miss a call to fill in for somebody, you've got a good excuse.

You need to decide is this the kind of job that "works" for your studying? Studying should be a priority so you don't have to stay in this type of job. What are the working hour expectations? what did you agree to do? Did you agree to make yourself available when others aren't? I suggest you be clear about what hours you can work and when, if it's possible and stick to that so you can meet you studying obligations.

Good luck. Don't give up but do be clear about what works for you and stick with it if you can.

You have no obligation to answer your home phone if it's not in your contract to be 'on call'.

I'd unplug it if I were you whenever you are at home! Or get an answering machine where you can screen your calls.

Your off time is YOURS.

I think that you are justified in doing that but understand that they can fire you for it, even if you've got a legitimate reason.

Maybe you should look for a different occupation.
