Yes. All Statins (cholesterol medications) can cause liver damage and failure in rare cases. Your doctor will monitor you to help prevent this. Statins can also cause muscle damage and kidney failure as well but this is also rare and usually happens in patients taking other medications.

If you are unsure about the side effects of any medication your are taking you can call your local pharmacist and they will be glad to help.

Cholesterol lowering drugs are mostly statin type of drugs like Simvastatin, Atovastatin, Rosuvastatin. They do have dangerous side effects upon the liver and heart. They actually inhibit the liver by their mechanism of action to produce less and less LDL cholesterol. This is very bad for the body as it needs LDL cholesterol for a wide variety of funcitons. The liver may have been badly affected due to long term use of statin type of drugs. Confer with your doctor and ask for alternatives. Herbal remedies restore liver function and form back to normal.

They are not intended to be harmful to the liver, however a possible side effect is liver damage. This is why doctors are supposed to do regular blood test to check for high levels of liver enzymes; high levels are an indication of liver damage.
