There is a chemical and some hormones associated with love. When you are "fall in love" the love chemical is produced and causes that head over heels feeling. This production lasts for around 2 years (I think).
There is a hormone (or maybe several not sure) that place you in a more loving frame of mind after sex.
These finds were reported in the last year or two, sorry I don't have links. But from this and looking at animal behavior, I'd say that love has been around along time.

I've heard it postulated that love is practical in that it causes us to protect our offspring - thus allowing our genes to carry on to subsequent generations. If that is true, then it first happened long, long before humankind. I believe the feeling of love is located in the inner brain - can't remember its name - the part that is mammalian as opposed to uniquely human.

How on earth are you ever going to explain in terms of chemistry and physics so important a biological phenomenon as first love?

It predates humanity.
It's a fairly simple, straight forward biochemical reaction in the brain.

I think it was when God showed love by drowning all the babies along with their parents, for what their parents did, being inherently unperfect. Tough love I guess.
