I am considering putting in a package for STA-21 Naval Officer Commissioning program. I am currently enlisted and have almost 5 years in. I am an AW, rank E-5, Fully qualified. I am interested in putting in my package for the NFO program option, being that I fly with them everyday and know what the job entails. I just have one question/concern....

I enlisted with a GED due to personal issues, Don't have much of a Highschool transcript. I Scored above average on the ASVAB and obtained an SAT score of 1200 combined. I can get all of the recommendations needed.

My question is...Should I even "try" to submit a package for the program? Or will I be looked over because of the GED?

Does anyone know the approval rate? 1 out of 4?

Why would you want to do that to yourself??? lol j/k

Seriously, if I were you, I would speak with your Chief about this, and if you can, find someone who has successfully competed for the STA-21 program. You may also want to try your Career Counselor, they should be able to help. I am not entirely positive what the minimum standards are at this time, but you may want to take some PACE, Distance Learning, or regular college courses, as well, just to boost your education and make you a more desirable candidate. Also, go to the ESO/Navy College, and take as many CLEP tests as you can. You can take all of your General Studies tests, and if you pass them, this will give you 36 college credits towards an Associates Degree. I hope this helps at least a little!

if you have zero college credits, your chances are about none. STA-21 requires you to get a 4 year degree in under three years. the more College credits you already have, the easier it will be to get picked up, all other things being equal. Most people get turned down at least once, and more often twice.. and these are people with outstanding Evals who smoke the PRT and have an Associates degree in hand.

Don't know of the approval rate. But, back in 1970, one of the other enlisted men who was selected for commission as an ensign along with me had a GED.
