He was stating his personal opinion, no problem with that as a military leader.
Do address what John said, who could not be further from the truth.
Clinton did not sign anything into Law. "Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Don't Pursue" is only an Executive Policy on how the law will be enforced.
It is still a punishable crime under the UCMJ to be a homosexual or engage in homosexual activities in the US Military.
Clinton, having never served in the military or having anyone on his staff with any knowledge of military law, didn't realize that the UCMJ being part of the Manuals for Courts Martial is in fact an extension of the US Constitution. In so being it would take a 2/3 majority of both houses of Congress and the will of the people to make changes to it.
So for the time being we have to live with a policy that is like an Ostrich with his head in the sand, "If you cant see it, It doesn't exist".
My personal opinion, there have always been and always will be gays and lesbians in the military. I'm more concerned if the do their duty, obey orders and keep their mouths shut. They should be left to perform their duties the same as anyone else. If they feel the absolute need to open their mouths and come out of the closet, they are gone!

I feel that his opinions are just that; his. How he feels is really irrelevant especially that he is retiring soon. As Americans we tend to want to restrict the rights that us mililtary people have fought so hard for us to have and keep. Just like all Americans and especially he has earned it, he has the right to say what he wants. Any one in the military would be lying if they tell you that there are no homosexual persons serving and helping this great nation. We have the don't ask, don't tell policy that we still uphold today. But me being on the batlle field what worries is me is n ot the sexual orientation of the person fight next to me. It is whether that person has paid attention to their training enough to help me accomplish our mission so we can go home alive. When your life is on the line you don't care if the person that saves you is gay or straight. That is the truth.

The General is just standing behind President Clinton's ban on gays in the military.
And yes, it was Clinton that signed that into military law

General Space should live in Iran, where the president proclaims," There are no homosexuals."

I knew a homosexual supervisor who got a subordinate drunk and sodomized him when he passed out. Sort of killed any support I had for allowing homosexuals to serve.
