As usual, Most no one here knows what they are talking about when it comes to raw feeding. Raw Chicken bones, leg quarters, whole chickens, backs.. I feed raw chicken WITH bones to my dogs at least 3 times a week and the other days, they are getting some other kind of raw meaty bone. Pork necks, turkey necks, lamb, deer..
Dogs have been eating the bones of small prey animals for thousands of years people.. Do you think the dogs in the wild drag their rabbits or other small animals over to a stump and de-bone them? NO, They ate the WHOLE carcass. Bones and all!! Raw feeders are simply not experiencing all this choking and ripping of throats all these people WHO have never tried it and never will are telling you all about it.
The best place to get info is the Raw feeding yahoo group. There are over 10,000 members and they ALL raw feed and can talk to you from experience, not a bunch of kibble feeders putting senseless fear into you.

Excuse me, but there are very FEW nutrition specialist vets. Vets know very little about nutrition. They have their walls lined with Science Diet.. nuff said...
Rely on REAL experts to tell you about raw feeding. NOT VETS. They are no where near being experts when it comes to feeding dogs.
Read the myths. It will dispell the previous posters garbage about solmonella ad other bcatieria. Dogs are NOT human and have far more acidic digestive systems and much shorter digestive tracts. Raw fed dogs are NOT experiencing bacterial issues. It's all bologna!

Dogs can eat Raw Chicken Bones but not cooked Chicken Bones. Cooked Chicken Bones become very brittle. They will splinter easily and can break in to very sharp shards. If your Dogs ate Cooked Chicken Bones there is risk of it getting a splinter of Bone stuck in its Mouth, its Throat or in its Intestine. The Bones can pierce Intestines or form a hard blockage that can be life threatening. Raw chicken bones are very soft and digested easily by most Dogs. As well as helping to clean Dogs Teeth they will also help guard against problems with your Dogs Anul Glands which is very important.

Those who feed raw diets explain that chicken bones, when fed RAW only, are safe. Cooked chicken bones are definitely bad for dogs as they will splinter and may perforate the esophagus, stomach or intestines. I have fed raw chicken bones without a problem, but I am sure that my vet might say that I was just lucky.

Cooked bones are hard and splinter, like swallowing needle pieces and raw are more digestible and safer unless your dog gulps his or her food. That could be dangerous. Most raw feeders seem satisfied with the diet. I fed all three of my dogs a raw diet for months and they did great on that diet. I did grind the raw meaty bones (wings and necks for all three, backs for one, others not ground). This was because one dog had two bouts of pancreatitis prior to the raw diet which were attributed to rawhides. None of the dogs had any problems whatsoever with the raw diet and I returned to it briefly during the height of the dog food contamination crisis (which I know is not over).
I feed them a kibble now which I trust, and at a separate meal, sometimes raw chicken back.
This is the site I used for balancing their diet when they were on an all raw diet:

I think raw chicken is a whole lot safer than commercial dog food. A whole lot healthier too. I have very limited freezer space or I'd have continued with it.
So I'd say, in most cases, raw chicken incl. raw bone is safe. Cooked chicken bones are very dangerous. Cooked bones in general are. My German Shepherd dog broke one of her canine teeth on one of those giant cooked and basted natural huge bones the pet stores sell.

COOKED chicken bones should NEVER be fed to a dog (or cat). Cooken chicken bones splinter and become dangerous—getting caught in the throat and damaging the digestive tract.

RAW chicken bones can be ground with the meat and fed without worry (for those feeding raw diets to their animals).

Raw chicken parts are not harmful to dogs. Cooked bones are a no, no.
I can remember when I was a kid on my grandparents farm when a chicken was slaughtered for dinner the dogs got the head, beak and all. They also got the feet and the guts. I am talking about farm dogs that lived longer than most city dogs. My grandparents had a Collie that lived to be 22.

Cooked bones= Very bad. They become brittle and splinter when cooked.

Raw meaty bones = Very Good. These are pliable, and full of nutrients. Dogs were designed to eat meat and bone.

It took me a few weeks to hand my dog a chicken leg, and several more weeks before I finally gained confidence that Hey it really is ok.

And as for people who say they will choke on them. Guess what, your dog can choke on anything. Ever listen to a dog eating kibble and you hear that *harf* noise? Guess what, the dog just choked. There are several reports of dogs choking on kibble and dying, but not one report of a raw fed dog choking on a bone and dying.

Any type of RAW non weight bearing meaty bones are good for dogs, especially chicken wings and necks, which are soft and easy to eat. Cooking removes all the moisture, makes them brittle, and dangerous to feed. Raw weight bearing bones are too hard for some dogs to eat and sometimes causes their teeth to chip.

Yes, Chicken bones are one of the worst things to give your dog. My dad is a veterinarian and he has people come in with dogs that have swallowed chicken bones and they got turned around in the dogs anal passage and he has to do surgery or give them laxatives so no matter what it is a very painful thing for the dog to go through because the bone can not dissolve
