I'm planning on joining USMC in a few months and I have all the physical requirements down except for the 3 mile run. I'm sure I could get the time, I just have trouble running farther than a mile. Any suggestions?

For me the secret to distance running was not going too fast at first. Lots of people assume running means sprinting....but try going for a comfortable jog first - you shouldn't be exerting yourself too much or really even out of breath. You'll probably be able to run much farther if you're taking it easy. My 'test' is if I am able to hold a conversation with someone while running easy. If I can't, I'm going too fast.
Once you get the 3 miles down, you can gradually start to speed up a bit and pay attention to your time. A good way to do this is by running at your comfortable pace for a specific time or distance interspersed with specific times or distances spent running as fast as you can. IE run 4 minutes easy, sprint 1 minute (whatever times are good for you will work...it could be as easy as running comfortably and then sprinting to a specific spot in the distance - a tree up ahead or whatever). Doing this several times (not necessarily every time you run) will really improve your speed. This is a method a lot of coaches use.
It's also a good idea to keep track of your progress - write down the distance and time every time you run...It's nice to see your improvements on paper. I keep mine hanging on the fridge...It will really keep you motivated.
One other thing that really helps me is listening to music!!

Before you run drink a lot of water because you will sweat and then you'll be thirsty so you should do that and also do what the guy on top of me, since that does help.

start with the mile and every other day increase it a little until you reach your goal,if you can do a mile you should be able to run at least two, push yourself a little harder
