WASHINGTON — The hope for immediate Senate action on the DREAM Act, which would grant legal status to hundreds of thousands of young illegal immigrants, faded Tuesday as the measure's chief Senate sponsor acknowledged he was having difficulty surmounting Republican opposition.

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., has been seeking to attach the DREAM Act to the defense authorization bill pending in the Senate. But in an interview Tuesday, he said the DREAM Act isn't among the items on the table as Republican and Democratic leaders discuss ways to quickly wrap up debate on the defense bill.

"We haven't given up completely, but the options on this bill are limited,'' Durbin said.

"I'm disappointed for thousands of young people whose lives are just in limbo," he added. "They want to move on with their lives and do good things, and unfortunately we haven't been able to pass the laws to make that happen."

Immigrant-rights advocates were dismayed by the setback but vowed to find other means to pass the legislation, which they have sought since 2001.

"There is no question that this issue doesn't stop here," said Cecilia Muñoz, senior vice president of the National Council of La Raza. "The longer we wait, the more talented young people we close the door of opportunity to."

The DREAM Act would allow illegal immigrants who entered the U.S. before the age of 16, and have lived here at least five years, to receive conditional legal status if they have graduated from high school and have a clean record. After six years, they could become permanent legal residents if they serve in the U.S. military for at least two years or complete at least two years of college. As with most green card holders, they could apply for citizenship after five years

This was just another attempt for amnesty that they were unable to cram down our throats as one large piece of legislation, broken down into piecemeal, and was tried to be spoon fed down our throats. The next piece is the Agras bill to grant amnesty to farm workers. It's just anther scam, because once they get their blue cards they can leave the fields and work in other trades, leaving room for the next wave of illegals to take their place and then Dianne Feinstein can demand amnesty for them so that growers will have a steady supply of cheap labor, while you and I the tax payers paid for the health care, education, social service for the illegals and their families

PS What's up with all these hand puppets

extraterrestrial beings dreaming of taking American military jobs. I heard one asserting, and that i quote, "i desire to serve my u . s . a .". He grow to be not even a US citizen. He had to serve Mexico!!! extraterrestrial beings carry their flags and language here. that doesn't sound patriotic to me. might i pass right down to Mexico and placed an American flag in front of my living house and stress everybody around me to talk English to me? of course not. the army is a profession basically like numerous different. human beings get out of highschool and pass distinctive paths through loss of possibility as unskilled workers. some can not do something nicely so as that they pass to college and study there. some are unskilled and use the army to examine a skill. maximum military human beings do the two. unlawful extraterrestrial beings are specific to shrink billets accessible to American youngsters who're already at ridiculously extreme unemployment stages-if this passes. it is a nightmare.

Who are they trying to kid the reason it's not going to pass is because of the number of people who oppose it and their desire to keep their jobs. I've never seen something that has brought together so many different colored U.S. citizen racists (we're racists because illegals say so) in my life to force our legislators to do what we want for a change. I hope they got the message and won't try again. I'll be watching to see the our government continues to do the right thing!!!!!!

Excellent. Thanks for posting the link. I am extremely happy that the illegals will not be getting more than our own legal children.

We still must remain vigilant for these traitors to try and pass this piece of garbage.
