Religion should never be taught in schools. However, Theology is a very important item to be studied!!! I can only wish that theology is a part of history class before I die.

As an atheist, I wouldn't have a problem with basic information being taught in a class like "world religions", as long as it didn't center mostly on one religious belief, and did not try to make claims that any one religious belief was "true". It should be handled as a sort of history class, where the students are being taught about what various people around the world believe, what part of the world those beliefs originated from and where certain beliefs are the most prominent. That type of information is important to know from a historical, geographical, and political standpoint.
Religion does not have a place anywhere else. No public school has a right to make claims that any one religious belief is "true" or is superior to any other.

Fact-
there already is a type of 'religion' in US schools and many other schools around the world.
Fact-
this 'religion'/ beleif, is evalution.
Fact-
most Christain/'religas' people prefer to go by the term Faith, because a religion is a tradisional refrens, when truely it's about Faith and a relationship with God. This is in most Christians but Cathlics, were it's more about tradisions.
Fact-
Public school's teach you anchent and historical beliefs, that is all but Chrisianity.
Fact-
I believe that the bored of edacation for the US should take out the teaching of Evalution or put every belief into the cariculum.
Fact-
the schools and parents are too afraid to do this.
Fact-
the prier wish will not be fulfild any time soon.

I have no problem with teaching religion in schools provided that an equal amount of time is spent on all major religions, topics like atheism, evolution, the big bang theory, etc. are also covered, some time is spent on smaller religions, and that the teachers show no bias or preference to any of the ideologies being covered.
Also, it should be an elective, not a required course. This is to appease those parents that do not want their children learning about other religious beliefs.

Good question. Religions can be taught in school as a comparative course, i.e. factual statements of history and beliefs, but there needs to be a representation of at least all of the major ones and the minor ones should be mentioned.
A single religion should not be taught or endorsed.
Religious beliefs about science or their creation stories should not be presented as an alternative to science.

Private schools may absolutely teach religion, however they wish.
Public schools cannot, other than world religion classes, like those taught at universities and do not endorse a particular religion. This is b/c public schools are run by the government, and we are permitted freedom to practice our own religion, or lack thereof, by our govt.

Religion and the bible were taught in public schools from 1775 til 1959. But back then public schools were under the hand of the Federal government.

No, it shouldn't. Which religion would they choose? If they choose Christianity, then anyone of a different religion would be left out because we cannot force them to adhere to a different religion.
If you include ALL religion, no learning would be accomplished.
So it's all or none, so the only option is none. There are plenty of other places to practice religion.

Big difference between Religion and Theology. Yes kids should learn about the Muslim faith, the Hindu faith the Buddist faith. This gives them a better world view. But teaching only one or having it preached is a no no. Best example of why we need theology, most of America cant tell you a single thing about islam except, Towels on head, Sucide, and virgins. They know nothing of the 5 Pillars. (Poor, pray, pilgramage and im sorry i dont remeber the rest but they are practical and good things to live by)

Taught in schools, no. Possibly as an elective as long as it covered all religions.
