When Jesus died, He was the perfect lamb - the perfect sacrifice for all of humanity's sins. His blood covered it all. The temple was the place for sacrifices to "get right with God". When Jesus died and the veil was torn, man no longer had to make those sacrifices. God was through with the temple. Also, only jews could enter the temple and only the high priest could enter the holy of holies. Now, the faithful....jew or gentile...has access to God.

The temple is an architectural model of the ages appointed by God. The veil of the temple separates the Holy Place from the Holy of Holies. The Holy Place is adorned with items which correspond with our current age, the "church age". The 7 branched candlestick, the 12 leavened loaves of shewbread, the golden altar and, of course, the veil. The Holy of Holies corresponds with the coming Kingdom Age. Everything is overlaid with gold, symbolizing righteousness, the mercy seat on top of the ark of the covenant symbolizing the throne of messiah established upon God's law contained within the ark, and the cherubim flanking the throne symbolize the two cherubim guarding the way to the tree of life, Jesus having been crucified on a cross of wood giving life where before had been the curse of death. The tearing of the veil symbolizes the events precipitated by the 7 pronouncements of the "mighty angel" at the end of this age when the way is made clear for gentile believers to enter into the fourth and final age appointed to this earth.

God is Holy, and nobody can enter into His presence represented by the 'Holy of Holies' beyond the curtain because of our filthiness. Those who do, dies.

Only those chosen priests (the Levites) who were given the authority to mediate between God and men may enter the Holy place after cleansing themselves.

But when Jesus died as a sacrifice for the sins of the world, the curtain (veil) in the temple that seperates the 'Holy of Holies' was torn all the way from top to bottom. It means that the shed blood of Jesus covered our filthiness so that God in His Holiness could now look at us. And now we have direct access to God the Father without the need of a priest to represent us, because Jesus has became our High Priest, our Mediator.

Since Jesus’ human flesh was a barrier, it was well symbolized by the curtain that separated the Holy from the Most Holy in God’s ancient temple.
At the time of Jesus’ death, “the curtain of the sanctuary was rent in two, from top to bottom.” (Matthew 27:51) This dramatically indicated that the barrier preventing Jesus’ entry into heaven had now been removed. Three days later, Jehovah God performed an outstanding miracle. He raised Jesus from the dead, not as a mortal human of flesh and blood, but as a glorious spirit creature “continuing alive forever.” (Hebrews 7:24) Forty days later, Jesus ascended to heaven and entered the real “Holy of Holies,” “to appear before the person of God for us.”

God's presence is behind the veil, and once a yr. the high priest went into the holy of holies to sacrifice, and had to have a rope tied around his waist, so if he died, because he was in the presence of God, they could pull him out, because no one but the high priest was to enter the holy of holies.
However when Jesus died on the cross, he tore down the separation that man and God had-by dying on the cross, so when he died on the Cross, the veil was torn so that never again would we be separated from God.

It signified that God was now available to anyone, up till this point only high priests could go into the Holy of Holies to worship or offer prayer to God - when Jesus died the veil ripped, and so God was now available to all men, not just the high priests.

We no longer need to communicate with someone else about the sins we have committed. We can now communicate straight to God and be forgiven. Notice that in the depiction in "The Passion of the Christ", the curtain is split from the top to the bottom. If a human were to rip the thick and ENORMOUS curtain, he would start from the bottom. Who, then, do you think ripped it? (Hint: You need to be in a high location) The curtain being ripped symbolizes our free communication with God and Jesus so that we could accept Him (Jesus) as our Lord and Savior. It's just that easy as of that moment.

Other answers got this one - but the cool part is that it was torn from top to bottom, and that it was a foot thick. Now, we all have the rights of priests to go before the High Priest Jesus and have access to the Father. Now, "there is one Mediator between God and man - Jesus".

It means that the person who believes that Jesus died on the cross for his sins and repents have immediate access to the throne (or presence if you will) of God. No need for a mediator, like a priest or something.
