If this guy is selling cars, he's a dealer and he is responsible for making sure cars he sells are in reasonable running condition. I'd contact the attorney general's office and see what options you have regarding this transaction.

Be sure you have all your receipts from both the sale and the engine repair.

Get a couple big friends to drive you over to get your money back for a car that never ran. Or Sue in civil court, never as much fun as kicking the feathers out of some one. Or what I would do $ 1,400 lesson learned and donate the car to a charity for future tax credit. What did you actually think a 1,000 car would be like? A 1,400 car? or even a 3,500 car is something some one else does not want any more. To keep away from junkers buy from little old ladys who cannot drive any more or buy from people you know. You risk all your money each time you buy AS IS car.

All courts have a public defender that can hear your complaint(s) and advise you of your legal rights and also defend you in court. A public defender is there to help or provide legal assistance or representation to those who can't afford an attorny. If you feel you have a just complaint you may have a public defender hear your case and he will collect the facts and determine if you have a just complaint. If so he will take on the case at no cost to you if not
found in your favor. Good luck and stand up for your rights.

If you have proof that he knowingly put in a non-functional motor, then you can take him to small claims court and sue him for the cost of a new motor. But if he put in a motor and it happened to not work, you're out of luck.

I would 'HOPE' there is a Better Business Bureau and/or a Consumer Affairs Office there - along with small claims court,
if need be. You need to get this person "NOTICED" . Like the BBB and CA.
