I read this article on gen peter pace of the US military about how homosexuals should not be allowed in the military and this is his quoted statement:
"We need to be very precise then, about what I said wearing my stars and being very conscious of it," he added. "And that is, very simply, that we should respect those who want to serve the nation but not through the law of the land, condone activity that, in my upbringing, is counter to God's law."
What is wrong with the religious and how can they even in their subconscious mind think that ANY law of this country should be based on THEIR religious beliefs? Can anyone be any more narcissistic as to think that everyone should be mandated by law to live by THEIR beliefs?

islander8181: I love your answer. We should do that since we are now trying to be the new middle east and base our laws on the bible. In fact we should stone adulterers. That is what the bible says

I wonder if General Pace would agree that every person in the military who has had sex outside of marriage should be banned from the military. Actually - maybe we should. That way the 11 people left in the army could continue fighting the war in Iraq.

If you have a garden and you start missing items that you planted would that make you angry or would you just say oh well. A Christian wants to be able to send his kids to school and not be afraid someone will bring a gun to school and start killing people. We are taking our morels out and what do you think will replace it. Think about it people of the USA have we not had trouble even though the military stands bravely we have trouble now days winning wars. I love this country and the people let us put away things that are against God.
10. And the Lord said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face?
11. Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff.
12. Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.
13. Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus saith the Lord God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you.
Peace and God bless.

I think its hardly narcissistic to want your land to uphold the values that it has upheld since its foundation. Most, if not all, countries throughout history have based their system of government on religion; even "pagans". I believe its shear folly for a, rather large, but none-the-less, secluded group of people to try and uproot a country's foundational belief system to live at ease in that country where their lifestyle is immoral according to the One who gave the standard for morals.

You are exactly right !!!
That's why you rarely hear about non-believers arguing with Hindus or Buddhists or others. Some religious people choose to live their own lives and do their own thing. Other groups want to take over the world. Even if they don't use suicide bombers to try to do it - it is still scary.

I agree with you.
This man is using his religion to enforce the status quo in the military. His view of "god's law" should have nothing to do with the freedoms allowed by the state.

People's fear of homosexuality comes from a pretty dark part of the psyche.
Attributing an irrational belief to "God's Law" means they don't have to examine it rationally. This is much more comfortable for some people.

He says right there why he's concerned with religion. And it's a reason why many atheists are concerned with religion, So... Whats the problem, question?
I think I may have missed what you were getting at. I agree whole heartily to your last paragraph.

I know what your saying, but laws are based on morality, and morality is largely based on religion. Since we have a predominantly christian society, the morals of christianity have been the basis of law for us, much to the chagrin of the secular humanists. Luckily, there is a lot of moral overlap between secular humanists and christians, whether they like to admit it or not! This is one of the issues that divides them.

Didn't George Bush once say that atheists should not be considered citizens or patriots? I'll find the quote if you ask for it...
